Equine Courses Offered At Post

WATERBURY — Post University’s Continuing Education classes in equine husbandry continue this month. Beginning February 13, instructor Jamison Wallace will offer the course Basic Horse Care Monday nights from 6:30 to 9:30.

This section covers conformation, use, unsoundness, vices, behavior, transportation, a horse industry overview, tack, and equipment. How to Think Like a Horse by Cherry Hill and Complete Horse Riding Manual by William Micklem, are the texts for this class.

Spring classes will include The Horse followed by Stable Management I and Stable Management II. Field trips and hands-on experience are a large part of this course. Students learn to take temperatures, bandage legs, fit saddles and bridles properly, and evaluate stables as well as design their own facility.

Then science takes over with anatomy and physiology and students “build” the horse’s digestive system using panty hose and bubble wrap. The series finishes with equine health, a very comprehensive study of the “ills horses are heir to.”

The equine husbandry Continuing Education courses offer comprehensive and practical information. The program is divided into six sections. They may be taken in any order and successful completion of all six earns students a certificate from Post University. Those who wish State Continuing Education credit may take these courses and earn a state CEU certificate. The sections can be taken in any order and, since they are done in a cycle, if you have to miss one you can make it up the following year.
