Emily Nezvesky scored 17 points to lead the Average Joe’s to a narrow 28-27 win over the Midnight Riders in Girls Senior League action recently.

Meanwhile, the seventh-grade boys travel team remained undefeated in the FCBL at 14-0-1 … thanks to an unusual overtime tie with Bethel. And Lindsay Laub scored 15 points and dragged down 13 rebounds to lead the Pacers over the Huskies in Junior Girls action.

SENIOR LEAGUE

Girls

Team Poeltl 50, Devil Dogs 33 – Tara Gaston scored 15 points as Team Poeltl secured the win. Lauren Nemeth, Lindsey Chimileski, Tara Ryan and Nora Sykes all played well. For the Dogs, Rose Jackman popped in 11 points as Christina Wolf and Kate Dougherty had strong floor games.

Average Joe’s 28, Midnight Riders 27 – Emily Nezvesky canned 17 points and Meg Rawson added six more as the Joe’s clipped the Riders. Stacy Shpunt and Emily Fields had great games. For the Riders, Courtney Brunton and Megan LaFlamme combined for 14 points as Monica Strzelecki, Katie McNulty and Marina Virgalla played well.

Clementines 41, Purple Pirates 28 – Casey Frobey and Jen Brill scored 12 points apiece as the Clementines rolled to the win. Jenna Zigman and Quincey Blanchard had strong floor games. For the Pirates, Sarah Holroyd scored nine points as Liz LaPerch, Kaity DiVanno and Christina Ercole played well.

Eighth-Grade Boys

Newtown 52, Redding 44 – Connor Collier scored 12 points and Chris Marks added nine more to lead Newtown to the win. Ricky Gallucci and Cole Depuy chipped in with seven points apiece. Kurt Nacewicz, Mark Scheunemann, and Ian Cooper led the fast break offense as David Bray, John Grimaldi, and Marks anchored the defense and shut down Redding’s fourth period attempt to battle back.

Seventh-Grade Girls

Newtown 39, New Canaan 27 – Sara Kelley canned 20 points as Newtown defeated New Canaan. Kelly, Kate Bowen and Ally Modzelewski led a dominating defense and managed six steals each to hamper New Canaan’s offensive threat. Kailtlin Marsden, Jennifer Daily and Bowen combined for 17 points to complete the scoring for Newtown. Brittany Wiberg, Daily and Marsden combined for 24 rebounds to control the boards.

Danbury 42, Newtown 30 – Kailtlin Marsden and Sara Kelley combined for 15 points as Newtown fell to Danbury. Nicole Elias, Carolyn Fagan and Marsden combined for 24 rebounds to lead Newtown’s efforts off the boards. Stephanie Suhoza and Meghan Bridges played well on defense.

Seventh-Grade Boys

Newtown 61, New Fairfield 30 – After a sluggish start, the Newtown seventh-grade boys easily pulled away from their FCBL league rivals. Scoring was balanced as usual with Nick Nazer, Ralph Sergiovanni, George Zaruba, Kyle Kromberg and Dan Lynch combing for 47 points. Max Paynter, Casey Tenney and Dan Greenwood led a suffocating man-to-man defense. Pete Young snared 12 rebounds to help the cause.

Newtown 60, Easton 10 – Newtown cruised to its 11th straight win as Ralph Sergiovanni had a double-double (22 points, 14 rebounds) while Dan Greenwood and Casey Tenney each added a season-high eight points and three steals.

Newtown 68, St. Mary’s 42 – Newtown ‘s athleticism dominated play over their much taller FCBL league opponents, using a tenacious half court trap coupled with a man-to-man defense. Kyle Kromberg, Nick Nazer, Pete Young, Ralph Sergiovanni, Max Paynter and George Zaruba all scored nine points in leading the balanced attack. Zaruba also added 10 boards while Dan Lynch had seven steals.

Newtown 51, New Milford 49 – A balanced scoring attack helped the seventh-grade team overcame the obstacle of playing away late on a Friday night following a Newtown Middle School game. Andy Lapple (12 points), Dan Lynch (nine points), Casey Tenney (eight pts) and Ralph Sergiovanni (11 points, 13 boards) led the way. Newtown’s defense held off a late charge as Max Paynter, George Zaruba and Nick Nazer each recorded three steals and hit key free throws.

Newtown 58, Bethel 58 (OT) – In the FCBL, a game ends in a tie if the scored remains tied at the end of one overtime period … which is what happened to Newtown and Bethel last week. The locals rallied from a 12-point deficit with a little over two minutes left to play and then rallied from eight points down in overtime to secure at least a tie. Newtown’s defense was led by Nick Nazer, Dan Greenwood, Dan Lynch and Kyle Kromberg while another unselfish balanced scoring effort paved the way: Andy Lapple (14 points) Pete Young (8), Nick Nazer (8), George Zaruba (8) and Casey Tenney (8) powered the offense for Newtown, now 14-0-1 in the FCBL North Division.

Sixth-Grade Girls

New Fairfield 38, Newtown 18 – Colleen Cunningham scored eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Newtown in a losing effort. Kristen Errico and Cady Jackman had four points apiece and combined for 10 rebounds. Maggie Donohue made eight steals as Casey Kearns and Alex Grant played well on defense.

 Ridgefield 39, Newtown 21 – Maggie Donohue had five points and five steals to lead Newtown. Colleen Cunningham tossed in eight points as Cady Jackman tossed in six points (with a three-pointer) and made four steals. Sam Whitley and Jen Smith sparked the defense

Fifth-Grade Boys

New Canaan 46, Newtown 29 – Daniel Gallagher, Michael Lord, and Taylor Steimle were the high scorers in a loss to New Canaan. Austin Bonadio and Kevin LeBlanc played tough defense.

Newtown 31, Westport 30 – Dominick Fedak canned a basket in the final seconds to lift Newtown to the win. Josh Barrett passed the ball in to Trey Trudell, who fired a pass to Daniel Gallagher, who then fed the ball into Fedak for the bucket. Michael Greenwood and Sean Ross had stellar floor games.

Junior Boys

Bullets 35, Celtics 31 – Charlie Kerr canned 17 points as the Bullets trimmed the Celtics. Andrew Gordon, Zack Bryant and Charlie LoBosco played well. For the Celtics, Ben Mahony popped in 12 points and Trevor Todd added eight more to lead the offense. Rockwell Anyoha dished off five boars while Brian Kuruc paced the D.

Lakers 47, Nuggets 43 – Tyler Edwards scored 16 points and Andrew Meisel added seven points with four steals to lead the Lakers to the win. For the Nuggets, Matt Narel popped in 12 points and Mike Locorotondo chipped in with six.

Knicks 56, Nighthawks 23 – Kenton Lord poured in 22 points to power the Knicks to the easy win. Brad Biscoe, Martin Basso and Mike Whitley-Rodriguez played well. For the ‘Hawks, Rob Brautigam and Robbie Blanc had six points each as Andrew Matsis and Michael Shevlin had strong defensive games.

Knicks 32, Rockets 29 – Brian Reszoly scored 13 points and Ryan Schmidt added six more to lead the Knicks past the Rockets. Ed White, Mike Poeltl and Dylan Kelleher had fine floor games. For the Rockets, Josh Jowdy and Ryan Goodridge combined for 16 points as David Kopyscinski, Ben Miles and Kevin Carney played well.

Huskies 43, Hawkeyes 30 – Joe Cappiello and Zack Brazo combined for 18 points to lead the Huskies to the win. AJ Ritchie and Cappiello dished off four assists apiece as Brazo grabbed 10 rebounds. For the first time, the Huskies had more assists (9) than turnovers (6). For the Hawkeyes, Kyle McNamara had 10 points as Daniel Clement (four assists) and Oskar Dean (five steals) played well.

Heat 45, Jaspers 42 – John Aminti scored 12 points to lead the Heat to the win. Rich Andreotta (five assists), Eric Thornberg (four steals) and Jamie Bower (six rebounds) had strong performances. For the Jaspers, Jason Kostecki scored 15 points and Steve Musco added 14 more to lead the way. Shane Wurtz dished off seven assists.

Wildcats 44, Eagles 36 – Jake DeVellis poured in 28 points to lead the Wildcats to the win. Ethan Johnson scored 11 points and CJ Portolese added 11 rebounds. Mike Gabor played well on D. For the Eagles, Keith McGrath canned 13 points as Kyle O’Connor had a superb floor game.

Bobcats 45, Eagles 37 – Dan Quinn scored 18 points and Kyle Pickle added 13 more to lead the Bobcats past the Eagles. Andrew Golankiewicz had eight assists as Jeff Selezan made 10 steals and Kevin Walsh grabbed 14 rebounds. For the Eagles, Keith McGrath canned 17 points as Kyle O’Connor put together a solid performance and dished off 12 assists.

Junior Girls

Pacers 39, Bulls 31 – Lindsay Laub led the Pacers to victory with 17 points and was helped by Meaghan Kelly’s six assists and Natalie Villas 10 rebounds. Hannah Bausch Gould chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds as well. For the Bulls, Kelly Sullivan had nine points. Mary Plavnicky (four assists), Erin Nemeth (five steals) and Meredith Letso (four rebounds) also played well.

Sixers 22, Huskies 18 – Taylor Ansbro, Kaley Kruger, Katie Pessin, and Hannah DeFlumeri scored four points each and led the Sixers to the win. Alyssa Buda was strong on defense and Keegan Frobey pulled down five rebounds. Betsy Vendel led the Huskies with six points while Lisa Vendel (three assists), Zoe Rabinowitz (four steals) and Kate Foy (nine rebounds) had fine games

Celtics 27, Knicks 18 – Samantha Lockhart poured in 10 points to lead the Celtics. Lyndsey Burns had six blocks and Cara Colaccurio and Becky Lipnick had fine floor games. The Knicks were led by Jen Spanedda’s six points, Meredith Laperch’s four steals and Lauren Picerno’s five rebounds.

Sixers 24, Celtics 16 – Kat Donahue led the Sixers with six points while Katie Pessin, Gina Pisacreta, Kaley Kruger and Taylor Ansbro each had four points. Keegan Frobey anchored the defense. For the Celtics, Lyndsey Burns popped in eight points and Laura Newberry sparkled on defense. Jackie Isabella ripped down five rebounds.

Pacers 29, Huskies 27 – Lindsey Laub (15 points and 13 rebounds), Meaghan Kelly (eight points and three assists) and Annie Fletcher (two points and 11 rebounds) led the Pacers to victory in a hard fought game. Brady Eggleston and Ines Hutchison had fine floor games. For the Huskies, Betsy Vendel (eight points) and Scarlett O’Sullivan (six points) led the offense while Bryony Langdon grabbed nine rebounds.

Bulls 38, Knicks 34 – Megan Sajovic (10 points), Michelle Davies (eight points) and Kelley Sullivan (seven points) led a balanced Bulls attack in a close game. Ashley Kuligowski had a great game defensively with six steals. For the Knicks, Meredith LaPerch led all scorers with 17 points while Marnie Thompson chipped in with eight more. Olivia Dillon and Danielle Rubino (six points) played very well.

Intermediate Girls

Suns 26, Huskies 12 – An aggressive defensive effort lifted the Suns to the win. Kelly O’Connor popped in 10 points and Marilyn LaCroce chipped in with nine as Marissa Cucco and Breanne Lubinsky were strong off the glass. Keri Chernoff and Stef Clavette had strong all-around performances. For the Huskies, Emma Kingsley scored four points while Allie Korchman and Aria Brownell had nice floor games.

Shamrocks 30, Liberty 15 – Amanda Stanton scored eight points and Jamie Keating had 10 blocks to lead the ‘Rocks to the win. Kelly Anne Brophy dished off five assists while Michelle Margait had three steals. For the Liberty, Chelsea Gray canned four points as Samantha Steimle (three assists and Laurli Melita (three steals) played well.

Da Bears 30, Nighthawks 17 – Andrea Nazer scored 12 points and Kathleen Cummings added eight more to lift Da Bears past the Nighthawks. Mara Scallon made four steals and Emma Fiore grabbed eight rebounds. For the ‘Hawks, Kelley Gaston scored 10 points as Jessica Fossum grabbed nine rebounds. Shannon Paproski (four assists) and Jill Jagoe (five steals) played well.

Rim Rockers 20, Da Bulls 19 – Jade Mather popped in six points and Emily Rowe added 11 to lead the Rim Rockers to the slin victory. Alex Cernick, Carly Gehrman and Morgan Hopper were superb on defense. For the Bulls, Lauren Meyer had eight points and Taylor Benson had four as Christine Arnold and Jenna Bonacorso played well.

Intermediate Boys

Eagles 20, Regulators 12 – Mac Morlock grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Eagles to the win. Oliver Powers paced the offense as Mike Zaccaro and Ben Stoller (eight steals) played well. For the Regulators, Will Fletcher canned eight points as Griffin Paynter and Shaun Mangold had strong games.

Nighthawks 42, Hawkeyes 27 – Ryan Pasko, Austin Puleri and Hank Helgren scored 10 points each to lead the Nighthawks to the win. Kyle Harrington played well. For the Hawkeyes, Matt Vavrek, Jake Volpe and Sean Devaney had strong performances.

Bullets 32, Huskies 13 – Sam Kerr scored 12 points and Rob Udhe grabbed 10 rebounds to help lift the Bullets. Pat Zingaro dished off six assists and Kory Kling made four steals. For the Huskies, Tom Coscia had eight points while Kyle Wilcox, Keenan Bennett and Chad Magoulas had fine floor games.

Bullets 42, Nighthawks 22 – Derek Krewson scored 12 points and Greg Campbell dished off 11 assists to lead the Bullets past the Nighthawks. Rob Daigle made six steals and Jon Hull was solid off the glass. For the ‘Hawks, Hank Helgren popped in 12 points as Ryan Pasko, Jason Marks and Austin Puleri played well.

Wildcats 36, Vipers 34 (OT) – Brandon Body canned the game-winning basket at the buzzer to lift the Wildcats past the Vipers. Max Brazo scored 10 points as Colin Morris (five assists), Kevin Dill and Mike George played well. For the Vipers, Ryan Powers had 14 points as Gary Braun and Eric McCabe played well. Greg Frattaroli canned two free throws to send the game into overtime.

Huskies 24, Mavericks 18 – Tom Coscia scored eight points to lead the Huskies to the win. Adam Stadalius, Jack McManus and Chad Magoulas played well. For the Mavs, Sean Burson popped in six points as Dan Sclafani played well on D.

Vikings 25, Trailblazers 21 – Kevin Phillips scored 10 points to lead the Vikings to the win. Tom Murphy (four assists) and Hames Redman (six steals) played well. For the Blazers, Ryan O’Keefe had eight points as Logan Mammen and Will Northrup had solid floor games.

Celtics 30, Eagles 29 – Ryan Korth canned 12 points as the Celtics nipped the Eagles. Ryan Lemay, Mike Lengel and Rob Beier played well. For the Eagles, Oliver Power poured in 20 points while Ben Stoller made seven steals and Rob Andreotta dished off a pair of assists.
