Mixed-Media Photography At Westover School

MIDDLEBURY — Wendy Costa is exhibiting mixed-media photos at The Joachim Schumacher Gallery at Westover School until March 19.

Ms Costa’s photographs are Polaroid transfers that she has altered with watercolor, colored pencil or pastel, or combined into collages.

The artist transfers her photographic images onto paper and then adds color, texture and contrast with a variety of media.

She said she often finds that the realism of the photograph is “insufficient to fully capture the emotion and sense of place from that moment when the shutter was clicked.”

Among the 40 works she will display, besides the transfer prints, several of her works are printed as digital copies, and others are collages of fragments of prints.

The Polaroid transfer processes, says the artist, are unpredictable and bring new challenges to each print.

“There is a very fragile boundary between control and spontaneity,” said Ms Costa, who is an art teacher at Wamogo High School.

The exhibit may be viewed from 9 am to 4 pm weekdays. Westover School is at 1237 Whittemore Road (Route 188, opposite the green) in Middlebur; telephone 203-758-2423.
