The Chinese System Of Energy Cultivation

SOUTHBURY — Qigong (prounounced “chee gung,” and also spelled chi kung) translated from Chinese means energy cultivation. It is an ancient Chinese system consisting of physical movement, breathing techniques and inward reflection designed to improve and enhance the body’s Qi, or bio-electricity, thereby improving health.

Almost anyone can learn and practice Qigong. The benefits of Qigong are many and includes improved balance and coordination, the strengthening of major muscle groups, improved flexibility and increased range of motion of joints, reduced stress and enhanced relaxation, a lowering of the resting heart rate.

Like Tai Chi, Qigong is a meditative martial art.

Pomperaug Woods will host a five-week class this month, to be led by Roger L. Godin, HPA, a therapeutic fitness instructor certified by the Chinese Health Qigong Association. His five-week course will commence on Friday, February 11, at 10 am. Each session will run for one hour. Cost for the full series is $20.

Pomperaug Woods is at 80 Heritage Road.
