It was quite a showing for Newtown High School in the South-West Conference Track Championships, at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on February 3.

Not only did the girls' squad win the team title, but there were multiple individual champions and numerous high placements between individuals and relays representing the NHS girls' and boys' squads.

The Newtown girls were first with 95 points; New Fairfield placed second with 66. On the boys' side, Bethel took first with 143, Weston followed with 77, and Newtown came in third with 49.

Aashni Shetty had two event wins plus was part of a champion relay contingent. Shetty captured first in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.95 seconds and won the long jump competition with a leap of 17-0.5. She also helped the 4x400 relay, also comprising Rachael Albrecht, Leah Morris, and Natalie McLean, to first place with a time of 4:16.16.

In the 55 dash Grace Lyons was sixth in 7.78 seconds. Lyons took third in the 300 in 42.73 and Brooke Bulkley was 14th in the 300 in 46.65.

In the 600 Leah Morris was second in 1:42.50 and Abigail Ihlefeld came in fifth in 1:50.63.

Newtown had a trio of top-ten placers in the 1000 with Keira Budge taking third in 3:11.48, Grace Chiriatti coming in seventh in 3:26.39, and Nadia Andrew eighth in 3:27.52.

Annabelle Foley was 12th in the 1600, clocking in at 6:00.12. Clara D'Amico earned fifth in the 3200 with a time of 12:45.75. Jessica Zhang (13:08.25) and Chiriatti (13:21.79) came in seventh and eighth in the 3200.

In addition to Shetty's 55 hurdles victory Newtown had Amanda Reyes in fifth with a time of 9.88 seconds.

The 4x200 relay team of Lyons, Abigail Manka, Lola Kessler, and Jessie Moore was second in 1:50.67.

The 4x800 contingent of Albrecht, Ilhefeld, D'Amico, and Bulkley came in third with a time of 10:32.27.

Newtown's sprint medley relay of Ella Hall, McLean, Moore, and Budge was third in 4:31.77.

The Nighthawks had three among the top five in the shot-put event. Isabel Khazadian came in third with a throw of 33-4.5, Amanda Reyes was fourth with a toss of 30-4.75, and Brianna Pellicone was fifth, logging a 29-10.5.

In the high jump competition, Ryann Los cleared the bar at 4-foot-2, good for eighth place.

NHS had three in the top ten of the pole vault event. Kessler placed fourth with a 9-0, Bridget Gioffe seventh with a 7-6, an Los ninth with a 7-0.

In addition to Shetty's winning performance in the long jump, Hall placed ninth with a 15-2.75 and Kessler came in 13th with a jump of 14-3.25.

Dissa Leads Boys

Soheib Dissa won the 1000 championship with a time of 2:32.12 and came in first in the 3200 in 9:55.58.

In the 55 dash, the Hawks had two in the top ten; Elias Brady came in fifth in 6.83 seconds and Gabriel Appiah finish seventh in 6.89.

Brady took third in the 300 with a time of 37.49. Noah Masotta came in fourth in the 1600 in 4:35.88 and placed fourth in the 3200 in 10:14.78.

The 4x200 team of Brady, Appiah, Tanner Smith, and Grady Marks was fifth in 1:37.43.

Newtown's 4x800 comprising Ubey Dissa, Shawn Cardamone, Mitchell Greenhaw, and Orion Lowery was sixth in 9:01.52.

The sprint medley of Smith, Derek Jopp, Reid Karnas, and Soheib Dissa came in second in 3:53.01.

In the shot-put Zachary Clouden was ninth with a throw of 32-0.5. Appiah came in fifth in the long jump with a 20-5.
