Newtown High School Lists Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships that it is notified of. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov, 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org, 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

PFLAG National Scholarships Program — The Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is offering nine national scholarships in the amount of $2,500 and 14 scholarships of $1,000 to lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender high school seniors who plans to attend a two- or four-year college. Information and application packets are available in the Career Center. Applications can be downloaded from www.pflag.org and must be postmarked by March 15.

Connecticut Nurserymen’s Foundation, Inc — This foundation will be awarding a $5,000 per year grant for four years of study totaling $20,000 (or $10,000 for two years of study) to a high school senior who is accepted in a course of study beneficial to the horticultural industry. This includes, but is not limited to ornamental horticulture, landscaping, nursery management, and greenhouse management. An important part of the criteria is scholastic standing and financial need. Instructions and applications are available in the Career Center. All applications must be at the foundation’s office by March 15.

Michaels Jewelers Foundation Scholarships to the University of Connecticut — High school seniors residing in Connecticut who plan to enter the School of Business Administration at the University of Connecticut and play intercollegiate athletics may be eligible for grants totaling $8,000 over four years (awards for two students are available). The awards granted will be based on financial need, scholarship, citizenship, and business promise. Special consideration is given to individuals of median rank in class who are not eligible for financial assistance based on high scholastic achievement. The deadline to apply is April 15.

The Susan Fund, Inc — For high school seniors who are residents of Fairfield County and who are currently or in the past have been in treatment for cancer. Criteria for considering scholarships are financial status, academic performance, community involvement, and personal commitment. Completed applications must be postmarked no later than April 1.

Connecticut Society for Respiratory Care — The CTSRC is offering scholarships for students planning to become respiratory therapists. The student must be graduating from high school this year and entering a Connecticut Respiratory Care Program in September 2004 Four qualified individuals will be awarded $1,000 to cover expenses of their education. Applications, available in the Career Center, must be postmarked by May 1.

Hawley Elementary School Scholarship 2004 — A $1,000 scholarship is being offered to a graduating senior from Newtown High School who attended Hawley Elementary School. Scholarship recipients demonstrate the elements of character, achievement, and dedication representative of the highest goals of education at Hawley Elementary School. Applicants must be ranked academically in the top 50 percent of their graduating class. Deadline for the receipt of completed applications is April 15.

Connecticut Reading Association — A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a Newtown High School senior who will pursue a career in education. The student is required to have a “B” average during the 2003–2004 academic year. Applications are available in the Career Center and must be received by April 1.

Connecticut PTA/PTSA Scholarship — In memory of Christa McAuliffe, First Teacher in Space, two awards of $1,000 are being offered to two graduating seniors from PTA/PTSA High Schools. The students must be planning to attend a four-year college or pursue a career in teaching. All completed applications must be returned to the Career Center by March 1.
