Nighthawk Wrestlers Win Bobcat Classic

Newtown High School’s wrestling team won the 14th Annual Bacon Academy Matt Bishel Bobcat Classic in Colchester on February 4, claiming first in a competition of 17 teams representing Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

First-place Nighthawks were Tommy Milligan, Kenna Gioffre, Marc Maurath, Luca Manfredi, Fisher Stites, and Jon DaSilva; Hawks to place third were Henry Terifay, Acea Shaham, and Charlie Dunn; Newtown grapplers who earned fourth were Daniel Kellerman and Thomas Morgan; and those who placed fifth were Jacob Wallenta and Andrew Corey.

The Nighthawks were coming off a 70-3 win at Masuk of Monroe on February 1.

This season, 18 NHS wrestlers have earned their varsity letter by scoring 18 points for the team, including the latest, Billy King, who earned his in the 132 weight class. He accomplished this with pins at the Greater Hartford Open on January 4, at Masuk, and in the Bacon Academy tourney.

Now it is on to the South-West Conference Championships which will take place at Stratford High on Saturday, February 11, beginning at 8:30 am. The postseason continues with the Class L State Championships Friday and Saturday, February 17-18, at Guilford High, with the State Open set to take place at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven the following weekend.
