Crash Outside Diner

Newtown Police report James McMahon, 16, of Sandy Hook, was turning left out of the Blue Colony Diner parking lot in the westbound lane on Church Hill Road at 10:18 am January 26. William Webb, 69, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2004 Lexus RX, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road. Police say the front right side of McMahon’s vehicle struck the front left side of Webb’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Webb’s vehicle was towed due to disabling damage.

McMahon was issued a written warning for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.

Drove On Wrong Side

Newtown Police report Carmelo Lantieri, 29, of Seymour, operating a Suzuki SX4 was observed by a Newtown officer driving on the wrong side of the road, southbound on South Main Street, at 2:05 am January 27. Lantieri was stopped and arrested on the charges of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and failure to drive right. He was released on a $300 cash bond with a court date of February 9 in Danbury Superior Court.

Failure To Obey Stop Sign

Newtown Police report Joseph LaCourse, 29, of Newtown, operating a 2018 Subaru Crossfire, was traveling northbound on Elm Drive at 7:41 am February 2. Thomas McAnaspie, 66, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2012 Nissan Frontier, was traveling eastbound on Sugar Street. Police say LaCourse attempted to make a left turn onto Sugar Street and the two vehicles collided, both sustaining damage to their front bumpers.

No injuries were reported. LaCourse’s vehicle was towed.

LaCourse was issued a written warning for failure to obey a stop sign.

Money Found

On February 2, money that was found in the parking lot of 6 Queen Street at approximately 9:30 am that day was turned in to the Newtown Police Headquarters.

Hit Car From Driveway

Newtown Police report Daniel Hall, 18, of Southbury, operating a 2003 Honda CR-V, was turning left onto South Main Street from a driveway at 3:55 pm February 3. Robert Bambino, 69, of Newtown, operating a 2022 Toyota Corolla, was traveling southbound on South Main Street. Police say Hall turned out from the driveway and struck Bambino’s vehicle.

Bambino was evaluated for injuries at the scene by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance and declined transport. Both vehicles were towed.

Hall was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at a private driveway.

Fender Bender In Lot

Newtown Police report John Scanlon, 43, of Brookfield, operating a 2020 GMC Sierra, was in the parking lot of 160 South Main Street at 7:26 pm February 4. A 2016 Toyota Corolla owned by Rachel Shirmer of New Fairfield was parked in a designated spot in the lot facing west. Police say as Scanlon turned right out of his spot, he struck Shirmer’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Rear-Ended At Red Light

Newtown Police report Joshua Sossa, 26, of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., operating a 2018 Jeep Cherokee, was traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way at 4:21 pm February 5. He was traveling behind a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe operated by Anne Dalton, 69, of Sandy Hook. Police say Dalton stopped at the red light at the intersection with Berkshire Road, and Sossa was unable to stop his vehicle in time, rear-ending Dalton’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Sossa received a verbal warning for following too closely and failure to renew registration.

Sexual Assault Arrest

Newtown Police report Omar Yunes, 21, of Sandy Hook, was arrested at 12:50 pm February 6 on the charge of second-degree sexual assault. He was held for a court date of February 7 in Danbury Superior Court.

Multiple first responder agencies were dispatched to Lakeview Terrace Tuesday afternoon after a local contractor’s dump truck went down an embankment. Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Newtown Police Department were initially dispatched to 143 Lakeview Terrace around 2:25 pm Tuesday, February 7, after the homeowners there reported the crash. The truck took down power lines to the home, which also affected electrical supply for neighbors. The unidentified driver was checked for injuries but did not go to the hospital. A Connecticut State Police trooper and crews from Eversource and Bud’s Truck & Towing also responded to the crash.
