Two people were taken to the hospital last Friday night, one in serious condition, following the crash of their vehicle on I-84 East in Hawleyville.

CT State Police report Nikolas C. Buzzeo, 24, of Southbury, was operating a 2005 Ford F-350 Super Duty truck on I-84 East around 7 pm February 9. The truck was approximately a quarter of a mile west of the Currituck Road overpass when, according to the CSP report, it failed to maintain its lane, collided with the metal beam guardrail and then a rock boulder on the slow speed shoulder.

The truck rolled over, ejecting Buzzeo and his passenger, Savannah Rogers, 23, of the same address in Southbury, from the vehicle. The truck came to rest on its roof.

Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company, Newtown Hook & Ladder, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and at least one paramedic all responded in addition to CT State Police. The crash closed the interstate.

Buzzeo and Rogers were both transported to the hospital. Buzzeo had suspected minor injuries, but Rogers had suspected serious injuries, also according to the report.

Buzzeo was treated and discharged, a Nuvance Health representative confirmed February 12.

There was no information available on Rogers.

The crash damaged approximately 100 feet of guardrailing. Traffic behind the crash was at a standstill for nearly four miles before the truck was towed and Hawleyville Fire cleared from the road. It’s unclear how much longer troopers remained on the scene to continue their investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Trooper Murphy #415 at Troop A-Southbury at 203-267-2200.
