Intersection Accident

About 6:10 pm on February 10, motorist Christian Qualey, 42, of Newtown, who was driving a 2019 Nissan Altima auto, was attempting to make a left turn from northbound Elm Drive onto westbound Sugar Street, as motorist Werner Schuster, 49, of Brookfield, was driving a 2013 Kia Optima sedan eastward on Sugar Street, police report.

The two vehicles then collided. There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Qualey for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign.

Two MV Charges

Police report that at about 7:17 am on February 8, they stopped motorist Rakeeda King, 33, of Bridgeport, near 146 South Main Street to investigate, because the vehicle that she was driving bore no visible marker plate.

After investigating, they found an altered temporary marker plate positioned at the vehicle’s rear windshield. Police charged King with failure to have automotive insurance and with counterfeiting a marker plate. Police released King on a written promise to appear for a February 24 court appearance.

Warrant Executed

Upon learning that they held a warrant for his arrest, Michael Mancini, 19, of Danbury, went to the police station the morning of February 7 and was charged with one count of second-degree harassment, police said.

After receiving a complaint about Mancini on November 15, 2019, police started an investigation, which resulted in a court warrant being issued. Mancini was released February 7 on a written promise to appear in court on February 25 to answer the charge.

I-84 Accident

In heavy, slow-moving traffic on eastbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 11, at about 5:07 pm on February 6, motorist Tracy Sheeder, 47, of Belleville, Penn., who was driving a 2020 Nissan Altima auto, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Brianna Schlemmer, 25, of Ansonia, who was driving a 2009 Honda Civic auto, state police said.

There were no injuries. Schlemmer received an infraction for following too closely.

Botsford Collision

Police report a two-vehicle collision at the traffic signal at the northern driveway for Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street about 7:05 pm on February 6.

Motorist Melissa Chavez, 26, of Danbury, who was driving a 2013 Honda Civic auto northward on South Main Street, stopped at the traffic signal, after which northbound motorist Nicholas Horvath, 31, of Milford, who was driving a 2007 Audi A-4 auto, struck the rear end of the Honda.

Chavez reported pain, but refused ambulance transport. Horvath received an infraction for following too closely.

DUI Arrest

Police report that at about 9 pm on February 5, they stopped a motorist near the intersection of Berkshire Road and Skidmore Lane in Sandy Hook to investigate after having seen the driver commit a motor vehicle violation.

After investigating, police charged motorist Nicholas Ellis, 24, of Middlebury, with driving under the influence and with failure to drive to the right. Following arrest processing, police released Ellis on $500 bail for a February 18 arraignment before a judge at Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury.

Hattertown Road

Police report a one-vehicle accident near 12 Hattertown Road about 6:50 pm on February 4.

Motorist Kurt Goudy, 53, of Newtown, was driving a 2004 Subaru Outback station wagon westward on Hattertown Road. While negotiating a left curve in the roadway, he lost control of the vehicle, which then traveled off the road’s left shoulder.

The vehicle struck a curbside residential mailbox, traveled across a residential driveway, and then went airborne, striking a tree with its right rear quarter section while the auto was off the ground, police said. The Subaru then landed on the ground and struck another tree head-on, according to police.

Both Goudy and passenger Brody Goudy, 13, of the same Newtown address, were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, according to police. Both people were transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries. The accident is under investigation.

As a police officer directs traffic, background, a Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighter, right, sweeps up some debris on Main Street following a two-vehicle collision at its intersection with Currituck Road, which occurred about 2:33 pm on February 7, causing extensive travel delays in the area. Police said motorist Steven Springer, 61, of New Fairfield, who was driving a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, was attempting to make a left turn from Currituck Road onto southbound South Main Street, as motorist Patrick Harris, 23, of Brewster, NY was driving a 2012 Honda Civic coupe northward on Main Street. The two vehicles collided. Harris and a Honda passenger were evaluated at the scene by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, but not transported. Police issued Springer an infraction for failure to grant the right of way. Currituck Road is controlled by a stop sign at the intersection. —Bee Photo, Gorosko
