Norman Zimmer

Decorated War Veteran

Norman Zimmer, 83, beloved husband of Estelle (Rosenblum) Zimmer, died on February 27.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two devoted daughters, Phyllis and her husband, Robert, and two grandchildren Zack and Maxx, of Sandy Hook; a daughter, Andrea of San Diego, Calif.; and a brother, Marvin Zimmer of Trumbull. He leaves several nieces and nephews in the Danbury area. A brother, Dr Ramon Zimmer of Danbury, predeceased him.

Mr Zimmer was born in Paterson, N.J., and moved to Danbury in March 1929. He attended the local school system and upon graduation from Danbury High School, Class of 1940, he attended Bryant College in Providence, R.I., for one year.

He then enlisted in the US Army Air Force, serving in the European Theater of Operations with the 31st Air Transport Group as an Air Operations Specialist. He received various battle awards and campaign ribbons. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on December 31, 1945, after 37 seven months of military service.

Upon returning home to Danbury, he became associated with his parents, Ida and Harry Zimmer, in a children’s clothing business on Main Street in Danbury. During this period, he attended the University of Bridgeport and earned an associate of arts degree in retailing.

The family business closed in 1960. Mr Zimmer then went back to the University of Bridgeport for additional courses in accounting and also became a real estate broker during this time. He graduated the University of Bridgeport and received a bachelor of science degree in business administration, majoring in accounting. He then continued to become a certified public accountant.

Mr Zimmer served as a member of the Danbury Common Council for five terms (ten years) starting in 1967, serving on various committees. He was a member of the Common Council when the current City Hall, the fire department, police headquarters and the public library were built, as well as when the city accepted Richter Park as a city facility.

Funeral services were Thursday, March 1, at the United Jewish Center in Danbury. Interment will follow in the United Jewish Center Cemetery, Gray’s Bridge Road in Brookfield.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the charity of one’s choice.

Shiva will be observed at the Zimmer residence in Danbury each evening through March 4. A Minyan Service was scheduled for the evening of March 1, also at the Zimmer residence.
