Hawks Battle In Assumption Winter Classic

The Newtown Nighthawks fourth grade girls’ basketball team finished in fourth place among eight JV (grades 5-6) teams in the Assumption Winter Classic held at Saint Thomas Aquinas gym in Fairfield this past weekend.

Newtown won its first game against Assumption of Ansonia, 13-11. The girls played with heart in an extremely physical defensive struggle. It was hard for Newtown to get shots off because the other team was so much bigger, but speed, defense, and perseverance helped secure the upset.

The next game was against an even bigger and better team from St. Lawrence. Newtown was unable to get into an offensive flow against the trapping zone defense and ended up losing 21-6 in another roughly played, anything goes style of play.

Newtown ended up as the No. 4 seed and had to play top-seeded Assumption of Fairfield in the semifinals. Newtown, once again, played passionately against a much bigger team. The girls never gave up, but ended up losing 25-10 in admirable fashion.

The Newtown coaches said the fourth grade girls had a great experience while learning about basketball, competition, sportsmanship, and being a good teammate.
