Sandy Hook Man Charged In Fatal Crash In Mass.

SHEFFIELD, Mass. — Police say a Sheffield, Mass., woman was killed and two people seriously injured after a five-vehicle crash in the Berkshires.

Sheffield Police Chief James McGarry says that at about 7 pm Tuesday, February 28, a Ford F-350 pickup truck driven by 35-year-old Frederick Weller of Sandy Hook was traveling north on Route 7 when it collided with three other vehicles.

Weller was charged Thursday, March 1, with offenses including motor vehicle homicide and fifth offense drunken driving, according to The Associated Press.

Chief James McGarry said a pick-up truck driven by Weller was heading north on Route 7 at about 7 pm on Tuesday when it collided with four other vehicles.

Another driver, 24-year-old Moira Banks-Dobson of Sheffield, was killed.

Fifty-two-year-old Russell Brown of Great Barrington was airlifted to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield where he remained in critical condition Thursday.

Chief McGarry said another driver, 52-year-old Russell Brown of Great Barrington, was airlifted to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. His condition was not available.

Four people in the other two vehicles involved received minor injuries or were unhurt, police said. The chief said Weller was also taken to Baystate, where he was stable as of Wednesday night. Weller remains in the hospital under police guard.

On Wednesday Chief McGarry said Weller was also expected to face charges including operating to endanger.

Investigators and emergency responders were reportedly on the scene for four hours Tuesday evening. Sheffield is on the Connecticut border, north of Canaan. The portion of Route 7 where the accident occurred is a straight stretch of road with a posted speed limit of 55 miles per hour.
