Kathleen Orfitelli, director of volunteer services for the Southern New England division of the Salvation Army, as well as members of the Newtown chapter, recognized the generosity of four local businesses, Wednesday, February 25, in a ceremony at the Newtown Municipal Center at Fairfield Hills.

Stop & Shop, Dunkin’ Donuts, Walgreens, and Yankee Wine & Spirits received plaques for their many years of hosting bell ringers in front of their Newtown stores during the holiday season.

Last December, 111 volunteers rang in the Newtown Kettle Campaign, included one couple with dogs, one couple who sang Christmas carols, and one dressed as Santa Claus, according to information provided by the local Salvation Army chapter. Together they raised more than $11,000, with 90 percent going to the Newtown Social Services Department, to assist residents of Newtown. In addition to the money collected during the Kettle Campaign, donations were received from local businesses, individuals, and civic organizations.

In brief remarks on Wednesday morning, Ms Orfitelli thanked Jeff Dymerski of Dunkin’ Donuts, and Matt and Ingrid DeAngelis of Yankee Wine & Spirits for their support. Representatives of Walgreens and Stop & Shop were unable to attend the event.

“[Your support] is important to the Salvation Army, divisionally and locally,” said Ms Orfitelli, adding her appreciation that the collection kettles are welcomed by their businesses.

The Salvation Army celebrates 150 years of serving others, this year, she said. “We are grateful for our volunteers and for the donations of the residents,” said Ms Orfitelli.

This past year, 101 people locally were helped in various ways by Salvation Army, including assistance with paying utilities, rent, oil, medical aid, and distribution of gas cards, according to the local chapter.

“Plus, 700 people benefited from the Salvation Army Food Pantry, located at Social Services [in Town Hall South], and 28 children received back-to-school assistance, as well,” Ms Orfitelli said. Forty-eight other children received back packs for school.

The members of the Newtown Salvation Army committee extended their thanks to the four stores, the bell ringing volunteers, and to the public for their generous donations.

“We can’t do what we do without the support of people such as yourselves,” Ms Orfitelli told the business owners.
