Girls' Basketball Team Wins State Tourney Opener

Newtown High School's girls' basketball team defeated visiting Cheshire 48-26 in the first round of the Class LL state tournament on March 2.

The seconds-seeded Nighthawks jumped out to a 20-3 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back, although the No. 31 Rams battled the rest of the way.

With the win, the Nighthawks will host No. 15 East Hartford in the second round on Thursday, March 5 beginning at 6:30 pm.

Newtown had nine players register points; Shea Murphy and Juliette Cryder led the way with ten and nine, respectively. Carlie Smith scored seven and Chloe O'Connell and Emma Magazu each had five.

Murphy hit two of Newtown's five 3-pointers. Amy Sapenter had ten rebounds, all on the defensive end, and five steals.
