United Way Honors Volunteers

DANBURY — The United Way of Northern Fairfield County (UWNFC) concluded its 2000 Community Campaign with an awards dinner March 1 at the Amber Room Colonnade in Danbury. UWNFC raised $3,345,000 during the campaign, eclipsing its goal of $3.3 million and marking a six percent increase over 1999.

Among those honored with the Shining Star award were Don Scacco of CL&P, Nicole Stampp of Newtown Savings Bank, and Tonie Maroun of Pitney Bowes. The Shining Star award is presented to campaign coordinators who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to the United Way and its work on behalf of the community.

Shining Star awards also were presented to Paul Carrozza of Branson Ultrasonics in Danbury; Kathi Beck of Dade Behring, Brookfield; Susan Murphy, Duracell, Bethel; Ann Lipsiz and Tony Arcamone, Eaton; Michael Zombo, of The News Times, Danbury; and Barbara Koger and Keith Jewel of Trident, Brookfield.

The Taunton Press of Newtown received a Spirit of Caring Award. Winners of this award are honored for realizing significant increases in employee and corporate contributions, exemplary per capita giving, and outstanding employee participation. Other winners were Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceutical, Cendant Mobility, Costco Wholesale, IBM Corporation, Praxair, Ridgefield Bank, Savings Bank of Danbury, United Parcel Services, and Union Savings Bank.

Carl Bailey, president of Bailey Financial Services, was the 2000 campaign chairman. John Martocci, president of Newtown Savings Bank, will be the chairman of the 20001 campaign.

The United Way of Northern Fairfield County is a local, nonprofit community-based organization that covers the seven-town area of Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, Newtown, Redding, and Ridgefield. Through its Community Fund, it helps support 66 programs run by 31 nonprofit agencies that address critical health and human services needs. Last year UWNFC served more than 75,000 persons.
