Manuel Simoes, Sr

Manuel Simoes, Sr, died February 28 at Danbury Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Lousa, Portugal, and was the son of the late Ernestina (da Piedade) and Domingos Simoes.

He was the beloved husband of Elvira (Marques) Simoes, his wife of 61 years. Two sons, Manuel Simoes, Jr, and his wife Lisa, of Sandy Hook and Arthur Simoes, and his wife Leslie, of West Hartford; a daughter, Carolinda Simoes-Velt, and her husband Victor, of North Branford; three grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Lucy Simoes; two nieces, a nephew, and several cousins survive Mr Simoes. Besides his parents, his siblings Jack and Carmelinda and a granddaughter predeceased him.

Mr Simoes came to the United States in 1947. He served in the Armed Forces during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged at the rank of sergeant.

He was employed for many years by Luke F. Sweeney Construction Company, until his retirement.

Mr Simoes loved, above all, to be with his family. He loved dancing, and listening to classical music. He was a member of the VFW, Amerigo Vespucci Club, the Portuguese Cultural Center, and St Peter Church.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of the 10th floor Step Down Unit at Danbury Hospital for their compassionate care and attention to Mr Simoes and his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Peter Church, 104 Main Street, Danbury, Thursday, March 6, at 10:30 am. Interment will follow at St Peter Cemetery. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury, Wednesday, March 5, from 5 to 8 pm.
