A Gift Of Knowledge Left To Newtown

To the Editor:

The author Louis L’Amour once said, “Knowledge is like money: To be of value, it must circulate, and in circulating it can increase in quantity and, hopefully, in value.”

Because of Dan Cruson, past Newtown Historian, archaeologist, author, and educator, Newtown and its residents are so much richer. This is true in Redding and surrounding towns, as well.

Dan not only continually learned extensively about area history, but conveyed that information to us. The Newtown library and Historical Society among other locations are abundant with the materials he wrote. Anyone who wants information on area history can find it through these writings.

I first met Dan when he joined us for dinner and provided a wealth of information on our 300-year-old house and the relics a neighbor was finding on her land. Over the years, he was helpful whenever I needed input for an article or was just curious.

My hope is that Dan is long remembered for the gift of knowledge he bestowed on our town. I know that plaques, statues, and room names are no longer in vogue, but something in Newtown should acknowledge the wealth of contributions he left to those who seek answers in years to come. His richness of scholarship will be greatly missed.
