Baked Goods Raised Some Dough For Haiti

By Eliza Hallabeck

Cupcakes, brownies and other goodies helped Reed Intermediate School fifth grader Sage DeSimone raise roughly $900 on Saturday, February 20, when she held a bake sale to raise funds for Save The Children.

After the sale, Sage said she was excited with the turnout and having raised so much money for the cause.

Sage was watching the early news reports of last month’s earthquake in Haiti when she decided she could do something to help those who were affected by the natural disaster.

So she organized a bake sale, combining her passion for baking with her desire to raise money to help in Haiti. Save The Children is a Westport-based 501(c)(3) organization that helps children in need around the world.

Sage and a number of her friends oversaw the bake sale in the lobby of Edmond Town Hall between noon and a little before 2 pm, and Sage was busy kept by keeping an eye on everything during the sale.

“I have all my good friends coming,” she said on Saturday, between helping customers. “It’s great.”

Donations from Andrea’s Bakery, The Blue Colony Diner, and friends all helped make the bake sale possible, she said.

During the sale, Sage’s friends were not just helping her inside with overseeing the goods. Brian Gallagher and Mike Long also stood outside with a sign pointing drivers on Main Street toward the “Help Haiti” bake sale.

After taking down the sale, Sage said there were still leftover goods that had not been sold, and friends were planning to visit her house to buy some.

“I feel like this will really make a difference,” Sage said. “I hope the money I raised will help save lives.”
