Drug Charges

Police report that at about 9:55 pm on February 24, they stopped motorist Richard Hopkins, 20, of New Milford for a motor vehicle violation near the intersection of Currituck Road and Hawleyville Road.

Police said that while investigating the incident, they smelled the odor of marijuana in the vehicle that Hopkins was driving.

Police then charged Hopkins with failure to obey a stop sign, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police released Hopkins on a written promise to appear March 10 in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

Moving Violations

Police said they saw motorist Kamran Khan, 20, of Fairfield driving a 2002 Honda Civic westward on Wasserman Way, near the Exit 11 ramps for Interstate 84, at about 10:50 am February 24. Police said that Khan did not have his headlamps illuminated, although it was raining at the time, so they stopped him to investigate.

Police charged Khan with driving without illuminated headlamps during inclement weather and also with driving with a suspended license.

Police said they held Khan on $5,000 bail for a February 25 court arraignment on the charges.

Slippery Street

Motorist Sebastio Sobrinho, 49, of Danbury was driving a 1996 Subaru Impreza station wagon westward on Butterfield Road, east of its intersection with Butternut Ridge, about 4:30 am February 24, when while negotiating a curve in the road, the Subaru skidded on the slushy pavement and then went off the right road shoulder, going over an embankment and striking a tree head-on, police said.

Sobrinho was not injured. Police said they issued Sobrinho an infraction on charges of traveling too fast for conditions and driving without a license.

Lincoln Vs Saturn

About 9:30 am on February 24, motorist Douglas DeBoo, 61, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2008 Saturn sedan southward on Hawleyville Road (Route 25), stopped in preparing to make a left turn onto the Exit 9 on-ramp for eastbound Interstate 84, police report.

A 2007 Lincoln sedan driven southward by Joseph Cloutier, 67, of Norridgewock, Maine, then struck the rear end of the Saturn, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Cloutier a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Church Hill Road

A two-vehicle collision occurred on a congested eastbound section of Church Hill Road near the Blue Colony Diner about 8:40 am February 25, police said.

The accident involved motorist Glen Radacsi, 43, of Danbury, who was driving a 2004 Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck, and motorist Michael Riccelli, 23, of Bethel, who was driving a 2005 Hyundai Tiburon coupe, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Radacsi for making an unsafe lane change.

Coupe Into Rails

Motorist Kylie Doty, 20, of Monroe was driving a 1998 Ford Escort coupe northward near 123 Toddy Hill Road about 10:30 am February 23, when the vehicle skidded on some snow-covered pavement and then struck some guardrailing along the right road shoulder, police said.

Doty was not injured. Police issued her a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Pontiac Crash

Motorist Nancy Dillon, 66, of Hemlock Trail was driving a 2005 Pontiac station wagon westward on Castle Hill Road, near Old Castle Hill Road, about 7:45 am February 24, when she lost control of the vehicle on the slushy road and then struck a utility pole along the right road shoulder, police said.

That impact caused the vehicle to travel across the road and strike some curbing, after which it came to rest off the pavement, police said.

Dillon was not injured. Police said they verbally warned her for traveling unreasonably fast.

Prohibited Parking

Police report they investigated a case of prohibited parking about 8:25 pm February 27 at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street.

After investigating, police issued motorist Daniel Pister, 23, of 12 Echo Valley Road violations for parking in a handicapped parking space without authorization and for driving with a suspended license.

Police released Pister on a promise to appear in court on March 16.

Great Hill Road

Motorist George Ferguson, 55, of 49 Taunton Hill Road was driving a 2007 Honda Civic sedan westward on Castle Hill Road, and was approaching its intersection with Great Hill Road about 7:30 pm February 26, when the Honda started skidding on the snow-covered road, police said.

The vehicle skidded through the intersection of those two roads and then went onto the property at 40 Great Hill Road where it struck a guy wire for a utility pole, after which the sedan came to rest against a tree, police said.

Neither Ferguson nor a passenger were injured, as both were wearing seatbelts, police said. Ferguson received a verbal warning for making a restricted turn, police said.

Warrants

At about 6:20 pm on February 26, police went to the home of Victor A. Stendbergh, 21, of 7 Sugar Street and served two arrest warrants against him, lodging two charges of violation of probation.

Those charges stem for original incidents that occurred in 2008, according to police.

Police said they held Stendbergh on $20,000 bail for arraignment on the charges on March 1 in Danbury Superior Court.

Truck Vs Truck

About 12:06 pm on February 26, trucker David J. Lapman, Jr, 42, of Watertown, who was driving a large 2007 International 4400 box truck, was attempting to move that truck from a parked position in a parking lot at 22 Barnabas Road in Hawleyville, when the truck slid on some ice and made contact with an adjacent parked 2006 Sterling boom truck, police said.

That impact caused a structural part on the rear of the boom truck to punch a hole through the cargo box on the box truck, police said.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Snowplow

At about 3:13 pm on February 23, James Tani, 37, of 10 Johnny Appleseed Drive, who was driving a town-owned 2007 Ford F-550 pickup truck with a snowplow mounted on it, was doing some snowplowing at Head O’ Meadow School at 94 Boggs Hill Road, police said.

At the same time, motorist Andrew Hull, 37, of 177 Boggs Hill Road was driving a commercial 2005 Ford Econoline van southward on Boggs Hill Road, police said.

Tani was backing the Ford F-550 eastward in the school driveway and entered Boggs Hill Road as Hull was passing the intersection of Boggs Hill Road and the driveway, resulting in a collision of the two trucks, police said.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Tani for a vehicle backing violation. Police issued Hull an infraction for a vehicle registration violation.

Ford Off Road

About 11:42 pm on February 23, motorist Martin Lacy, 54, of Waterbury, who was driving a 2000 Ford Focus sedan northward near 64 Mile Hill Road South, skidded on the snowy/slushy road and went off the right road shoulder, striking some brush and trees before coming to rest positioned downward on an embankment, police said.

Lacy was not injured. Police gave him a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Button Shop Accident

About 2:25 pm February 23, motorist Mark Scheunemann, 18, of 21 Clearview Drive was driving a 2006 Mazda sedan eastward near 31 Button Shop Road, as motorist Ryan Pasko, 16, of 24 Poplar Drive was driving a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck westward there, police said.

The Mazda skidded on the snow-covered road and entered the opposite lane, resulting in a collision, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Scheunemann for traveling too fast for conditions.

High Rock Crash

Motorist Taylor Cote, 18, of 101 Great Ring Road was driving a 2003 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck southward near 39 High Rock Road about 3 pm February 23, when the truck slid on the snow-covered road, exited the street and then went off a rock ledge, striking a tree, according to police.

Cote was not injured. Police verbally warned Cote for traveling too fast for conditions.

Interstate Accident

Motorist Jennifer Adames, 19, of Danbury was driving a 2003 Honda Accord eastward on Interstate 84, near Exit 11, about 11:23 am February 23, when while traveling in the left lane of three lanes, the auto spun out on the snow-covered road and then struck some guardcabling along the right road shoulder, state police said.

Adames was not injured. State police issued Adames an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

Garner Driveway

State police report that at about 7:52 am on February 23, motorist Erica Fike, 32, of Middletown was driving a 2007 Toyota Camry on the driveway at Garner Correctional Institution at 50 Nunnawauk Road, when during slippery road conditions the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve on the driveway and struck a lightpost.

Fike was not injured. State police verbally warned her for traveling too fast for conditions.

Snowy Road

Motorist Victor George, 66, of Easton was driving a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup truck westward near 55 Great Hill Road at about 3 pm February 23, when the vehicle went out of control on the slippery road, went off the right road shoulder and struck a tree, according to police.

George was not injured. Police issued him a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Dodgingtown Collision

About 6:17 pm February 24, motorist Joan Plouffe, 45, of 9 Sturges Road was driving a 2009 Honda Pilot SUV westward on Dodgingtown Road (Route 302), as motorist Amelia Shwartz, 23, of 52 Flat Swamp Road, who was driving a 2002 Volkswagen Cabriolet convertible, was attempting to make a right turn from Flat Swamp Road onto eastbound Dodgingtown Road, police report.

The Volkswagen made the right turn too widely, resulting in the two vehicles colliding, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Shwartz a written warning for a moving violation.

Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for her arrest, Nicole Cain, 22, of Willington, turned herself over to police at the police station on the morning of March 1 and was charged with second-degree failure to appear in court, failure to obey a stop sign, driving with a suspended license, and driving an unregistered vehicle, police report.

Police said the charges stem from an original incident last September 16 in which Cain allegedly drove a 2001 Cadillac past a stop sign without stopping at the intersection of Great Hill Road and Taunton Hill Road.

Cain appeared on the charges March 1 in Danbury Superior Court, police said.

Past Incident

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Zachary Kline, 21, of Trumbull turned himself in at the police station on the morning of March 1 and was charged with failure to respond to an infraction, possession of alcohol in a motor vehicle by a minor, driving with a suspended license, and driving an unregistered vehicle.

Police said the charges stem from an original incident last June 24 in which police stopped Kline who was driving a 1997 Jeep Cherokee on Main Street. At that time, Kline was under age 21.

Kline appeared on the charges on March 1 in Danbury Superior Court, police said.

Subaru Hits Pole

Police report that motorist John McDermott, 24, of Bethel was driving a 2004 Subaru Forester station wagon northward near 31 Mt Pleasant Road about 12:13 am on February 27, while it was snowing and the roadway was covered with snow and slush.

While traveling, the Subaru spun around, crossed over the road’s centerline and then moved backwards onto the southbound road shoulder, striking a utility pole with its rear end, police report.

Police said McDermott was not injured. Police said they verbally warned McDermott for traveling too fast for conditions.

Warrants

Police report they went to Danbury Superior Court on March 1 and served two arrest warrants against  Tony Schick, 25, of Danbury, who was in court in connection with other matters.

Police said they arrested Schick on charges of first-degree larceny and third-degree burglary in connection with an incident last October 22 on Chestnut Hill Road in Sandy Hook. Both charges are felonies.

In that incident, jewelry, personal papers, and some money was stolen, police have said. First-degree larceny represents the theft of items worth more than $20,000.

Also, police said they arrested Schick on a charge of sixth-degree larceny in connection with an incident last November 5 on Huntingtown Road.

Schick was arraigned on those charges in court on March 1. Schick was being held on March 3 on various criminal charges on $212,000 bail at Bridgeport Correctional Center. Schick is scheduled to appear again in Danbury Superior Court on March 22.

Car Wash Theft

On the morning of March 3, Fairfield police notified Newtown police that they had in custody a man for whom Newtown police held an arrest warrant.

Newtown police then arrested Samuel Anthony, 39, of Bridgeport on a charge of third-degree larceny, which is a felony.

Police said Anthony allegedly stole money from Newtown Car Wash on Simm Lane in July 2008. Based on the charge and the period during which the crime allegedly occurred, the amount of money stolen would have ranged from $1,000 to $5,000.

Police held Anthony on $5,000 bail for a March 3 court arraignment.

Alcohol Aftermath

After learning that police held warrants for their arrest, twin brothers from Monroe turned themselves over to police at the police station on the morning of March 2 and were each charged with failure to respond to an infraction, police said.

Police said they arrested Joshua Berez and Aaron Berez, both 20, on the charges.

Police said they obtained warrants against the Berez brothers because they had not responded to infractions which they received on May 30, 2009, on charges of illegal possession of alcohol by a minor on private property. Those tickets carry $136 fines.

The Berez brothers were among 12 underage people who received alcohol violations from police stemming from a party held at a Button Shop Road home.

Each brother posted $136 bail on March 2. Both were released for March 16 appearances in Danbury Superior Court.

Stray Chicken

Police report that a stray chicken was found wandering in the area of 7 Susan Lane, off Mt Pleasant Road, about 5:20 pm March 2. Police said the bird is being held at a local farm until its owner claims the animal. The owner may contact the town’s animal control unit at 203-426-6900 to claim the bird.

 

Texting Violation

About 3:15 pm March 2, motorist Lori Lane, 42, of Brewster, N.Y., was driving a 2002 Honda CRV southward near 45 Main Street, just behind southbound motorist John McDermott, 24, of Bethel, who was driving a 2001 Subaru Forester station wagon, police said.

The Honda then struck the Subaru from behind, police said. There were no injuries.

Police said they issued Lane an infraction on charges of failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, distracted driving, operating a motor vehicle while using a mobile electronic texting device, and failure to wear a seatbelt. Police said they also gave Lane a written warning for a driver’s license violation.
