“I want to get away from the usual talk about best-sellers and ‘big books’ and discuss serious writing,” the author and now radio host said recently.

“Literary Discord” will be heard every fourth Thursday of the month, at noon. Guests on the first few shows have included Christopher Lehmann-Haupt, a principal reviewer for The New York Times; Sybil Steinberg, a literary critic at Publishers Weekly; and Richard Eder, a cultural writer in The New York Times’ Boston bureau. A session with the celebrated novelist E.L. Doctorow, author

of Ragtime and the new novel City of God, is planned.

“WPKN seemed like a good forum for a talk program about noncommercial writing that avoids the bottom-line approach,” says the Dutch-born Koning, who is at work on a new novel entitled Zeeland.

“Literary Discord” is produced by Scott Harris, WPKN’s public affairs director, as part of an expanding offering of talk shows, news analysis and commentary offered on the station.
