On The Courts — Youth Basketball Highlights

Girls

Midgets

Chili Peppers vs Junior Mints: For the Peppers, Allison Kelleher and Jena Lavelle led the attack and  Jenna Carvahlo and Sage Karp were aggressive on defense. For the Junior Mints, Jemma Petite and  Jackie Matthews led the offense with Lauren Ankens and Olivia Hage playing strong defense.

Purple People Eaters vs Lightning Blue: For the Purple People Eaters, Courtney Carroll and Beth Savinelli played great offense while Lexy Leidlin and Alex Futterman were strong on defense. For the Lightning Blue, Lucy Draper and Kristen Cirone were strong on offense and Julia Bashak and Sara Widmann were aggressive on defense.

Blue Storm vs Cheese Doodles: For the Blue Storm, Shannon Cheh and Elizabeth Weisgerber played great offense while Erin Burns and Katie McCabe were great on defense. For the Cheese Doodles, Kira Smith and Jenna Goski were strong offensively and Sienna Cummings and Danielle Powell were strong on defense.

Dynamites vs Yellow Jackets: For the Dynamites, Jordan Williams and Ava Petrellese were strong on offense while Olivia Brosnon and Catherine Shaw were aggressive on defense. For the Yellow Jackets, Allie Tassiello and Jackie Gouveia led the offense while Emily Krasnickas and Emilia Getzinger-McGuinness were strong on defense.

Grade 4

Blue Lightning 16, Comets 14: Jessica Maturo drove the length of the court for the game-winning layup with only five seconds remaining to give the Blue Lightning an exciting come-from-behind victory. Nicki Zaccaro led a great team effort with 8 points, 8 rebounds and 8 steals. Nicole Frascatore added a key basket and Lauren King and Natalie Shaker played great defense down the stretch. Megan Goyda scored 8 points to lead the Comets.

Wildcats 14, Tigers 12: The Wildcats handed the Tigers their first loss of the season. Grance Frost scored 6 points grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked 5 shots and Alison Indelicato added 4 points to lead the way. The whole Wildcat team played stifling defense. Kayla O’Sullivan, Cassidy Datin, Emily Bell and Julia Bogdanoff played well. Chloe Kasak had 6 points for the Tigers. 

Pirhanas 16, Blue Devils 10: Colleen McCarthy scored 10 points and Sydney Flint played a solid offensive game as the Pirhanas won a hard fought contest. Emily Neave and Carly Kreshpan each scored 4 points for the Blue Devils and Claire Swanson led the defensive charge.

Grade 5 Travel

Newtown 28, New Fairfield 14: Katie Mossbarger and Haley Ryan had key assists from the point guard position while Kelly Merrick and Caitlin Linden made a strong offensive effort. Tough defense provided by Lauren Wilcox who drew several fouls under the boards helped lead the team to a decisive victory.

Newtown 42, Fairfield 34: The offense was sparked by Alana Murray and Katie Laaksonen. On the defensive side, multiple steals made by Lindsay Hoyt and Casey Harkins along with rebounding by Maren Brady helped Newtown earn its final win of the 19-5 regular season.

Junior Playoffs

Huskies 69, The Team 52: For the Huskies Pat Mullins was the high scorer with 25 points. Grant Ricketts had 5 assists, Dean Demers had 2 steals and Jeff Peterson had 8 rebounds. For The Team, Joe Davis was the high scorer with 20 points. Tommy Gleason had 4 assists and 13 points and Jack Kearney had 4 steals. 

Heat 54, Runnin’ Rebels 44: For the Heat, Justin Devellis was the high scorer with 41 points and 14 rebounds. Colton Spasta had 4 assists, Ryan Rosenberger had 3 steals and Nick Madden had 11 rebounds. Spencer Brindley had 4 key points. Kyle Gordon had 5 rebounds. For the Runnin’ Rebels, Christian Mather was the high scorer with 13 points and 4 steals. Riley Cross was the assist leader and Drew Sullivan had 20 rebounds.

Tarheels 36, Trashtalkers 23: For the Tar Heels, Drew Tarantino was the high scorer with 10 points. Brendan Scott had 5 assists, Ben Payne had 3 steals and Steve Rahr had 6 rebounds. For the Trashtalkers, Jamie MacDonald was the high scorer with 6 points. Ryan Palmer played great defense.

Gators 41, Warriors 33: For the Gators, Noah Sock scored 10 points and Steve Conway scored 8. Wes Morlock had 3 assists, Owen Gaston had 2 steals and Austin Hubbert had 10 rebounds. For the Warriors, Brandon Cooper and Eric Fiore each had 10 points. Eric Pisani had 4 assists, Ryan Pisani had 4 steals and Chris Otero had 8 rebounds. Colin Post, Brian Anderson and Patrick Pearce played well on defense.

Knicks 45, Celtics 33: For the Knicks, Ivan Hutchinson was the high scorer with 15 points and Patrick Riccardi helped lead the offense. Matt White was the defensive star and Robbie Hughes was the rebound leader. For the Celtics, Matt Lindell, Tom Floros and Cameron McCleary combined to score 26.  Troy Larsen was the defensive star and Andrew Ryan was the rebound leader.

Bricklayers 53, Nets 34: For the Bricklayers, Jack Champagne was the high scorer with 23 points. Jonah Muniz had 10 points. Andrew Derrickson had 9 assists and Matt Baldino had 6 rebounds. For the Nets, Angel Santos had 14 points and Nicky Sajovic had three 3-pointers and 11 points. Richard Greenwood had 6 assists and 6 steals. Justin Weiner had 6 rebounds. Joe Calbo, Sam Boland and Marc Hernandez had a strong defense effort. 

Nighthawks 56, Grizzlies 35: For the Nighthawks, Mike Scharfenberg was the high scorer with 36 points. Matt Spencer had 2 steals. Samuel Adams had 4 points, Matt Wood 7 points and Nick Norberg added 4. Matt Spencer and Daniel Winn played great defense. For the Grizzlies, Ty Runkle was the high scorer with 14 points and three 3-pointers. Garrison Buzzanca had 4 assists and JD Kitzmiller had 3 steals.

Bullets 54, Wildcats 46: For the Bullets, Chris Devaney was the high scorer with 13 points. Tyler Gibney had 10 points. Chris Carroll was the assist leader, Austin Babyak was the defensive star and Kevin Shpunt had 12 rebounds. For the Wildcats, Wyatt Depuy was the high scorer with 19 points.  Virgil Procaccini had 12 points. Patrick Rowley and Matt Barra led the defense.

Grade 6

Dragons 41, Gators 27: Deegan Beauchemin, Robby Schreiber and Tommy Rahr all contributed to the Dragons’ offense in a hard-fought battle. A strong basket by Sean Kemsley and tenacious defense by Rory Phillips sparked the comeback for the Dragons. Sawyer Conrad led the fast break while Colton Moroney was tough on the boards. David Csordas, Bobby Lydon and David Matthews played well on both ends of the court. In the Gator’s final game, Jason Ferrari led the team with 10 points. He also played superbly on defense. Bryce Decker led the team in rebounds with 10, while scoring 5 points. Robbie McCabe took advantage of the pick and roll to score 2 points. Brian Raab and Adam Israel combined for 10 points. Mitchell Godin and Dan Hamula played inspired defense and Gustavo Porto pulled down numerous rebounds.

Semi-Pros 36, Wolves 34: Harry DePuy and James Burdette combined to score 23 points to lead the Semi-Pros in the first round of the playoffs. Clutch foul shooting by Jared Tannenbaum, DePuy and Burdette as well as strong defensive and rebounding performances from DePuy, Joe Stromski and Mark Dowling brought the Semi-Pros back from a four-point deficit with three minutes to go. Kevin Ovendorf’s 13 points led The Wolves’ scoring attack. Kaj Djonne (7 points) and Michael Cirone (6points) also had excellent games. Brandon O’Sullivan chipped in 4 points, while Kaustav Mitra and Tyler Lenox anchored the defense.
