Warrant Arrest

Police report that they made a traffic stop near 5 Queen Street about 3:31 pm on March 8 and after investigating charged Eric S. Carmichael, 44, of Sandy Hook, with two counts of violation of probation and one count of second-degree failure to appear in court. Carmichael, who is free on bail, is scheduled to return to court on April 9.

Off The Road

About 4:15 pm on March 8, motorist Maurizio DeFina, 79, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2011 Toyota Sienna minivan northward on Hawleyville Road, south of Farrell Road, drove off the left side of Hawleyville Road, struck some guardcabling and posts, and then hit a utility pole, causing some guy wires to fall across the roadway, police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported DeFina to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries. Hawleyville volunteer firefighters responded to the accident. Police verbally warned DeFina for failure to drive to the right.

Truck Hits Bridge

Police report that about 6:09 am on March 6, trucker Marcos Gonzalez, 27, of Elizabeth, N.J., who was driving a 2012 International 4300 large box truck northward on Botsford Hill Road, struck and then became stuck underneath the Housatonic Railroad’s rail overpass there, with the truck’s cargo compartment heavily damaged due to the impact.

There were no injuries. The truck was towed away. Police issued Gonzalez an infraction for exceeding a bridge’s posted clearance with a vehicle.

Subaru Hits BMW

About 11:20 am on March 6, motorist Daniel Rodriguez, 24, of Norwalk, who was driving a 2011 BMW 328-i sedan northward on Main Street, near Church Hill Road, stopped for traffic conditions, and was then struck from behind by motorist Justine Fairbairn, 19, of Watertown, who was driving a 2013 Subaru Impreza auto, police report.

Ambulance volunteers responded to the accident to check on Rodriguez. Fairbairn received a written warning for following too closely, according to police.

Interstate Accident

State police report that three vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction accident on eastbound Interstate 84, east of Exit 10, at about 5:43 pm on March 6.

In that incident, motorist Mali Gruber, 19, of East Hampton, N.Y., who was driving a 2006 Mercedes-Benz 350 vehicle, slowed for traffic conditions, as did motorist Nongkaew McLaine, 32, of New Britain, who was driving a 2018 Subaru Impreza auto.

Motorist Mirian Munoz-Mainato, 23, of Waterbury, who was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze auto, then struck the rear end of the Subaru, pushing the Subaru into the rear end of the Mercedes. There were no injuries. Muniz-Mainato received an infraction for following too closely.

School Bus Crash

Police said that at about 6:49 am on March 3, Theresa Vittaco, 53, of Trumbull, was driving a 2020 Bluebird school bus northward on South Main Street, just south of its intersection with Sugar Street, as Ryan Tani, 19, of Sandy Hook, was driving a commercial 2006 Sterling LT-95 truck southward on South Main Street.

The school bus then crossed into the southbound lane and the two vehicles’ left-exterior rear-view mirrors collided. There were no injuries. The bus is owned by All-Star Transportation. Police issued Vittaco an infraction for failure to drive to the right.

Sideswiped

On eastbound Interstate 84, about 500 feet east of the Exit 9 on-ramp, at about 7:27 am on March 3, motorist Michelle DiPietro, 20, of Danbury, who was driving a 2007 Toyota RAV-4 SUV, sideswiped a 2017 Kia Cadenza sedan driven by Eric Goodsell, 53, of Brookfield, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police verbally warned DiPietro for making an unsafe lane change.

Cadillac Vs Toyota

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Church Hill Road, just west of the Exit 10 interchange, at about 12:54 pm on March 2, according to police.

Motorist John Ferris, 68, of White Plains, N.Y., who was driving a 2014 Caddiac CTS sedan, was attempting to make a left turn, when the Cadillac collided with a 2013 Toyota Highlander SUV driven by John Chion, 76, of Sandy Hook.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Ferris for making a restricted turn.
