Peter Horan set the Class L State Championship backstroke record with a time of 50.49 seconds, and also won the 100 yard freestyle race, finishing in 46.17 — both Newtown High School records he previously broke this season — on his way to helping the Nighthawks place seventh in the meet at Cornerstone Aquatics Center in West Hartford, on March 15. The Nighthawks scored 276 points; New Canaan was first with 680.

Horan’s backstroke time was the best Class L has seen since Fairfield Ludlowe’s John Whiteside finished in 50.57 back in 2014. Horan scored 30 points for his team in each of his wins. He narrowly out-raced Fairfield Prep’s Owen Tharrington who finished in 50.98.

“Very happy for him about the wins — especially the backstroke. To break a Class L record was something we have looked at the last few weeks. He swam a great race. Hoping there’s a bit more left in the tank for opens,” said Newtown Coach Adam Fielding, referring to the State Open, set for March 19, back at Cornerstone.

Newtown had success in a variety of events during the Class L competition.

In the 200 yard medley relay event, Horan, Grant Carson, Gabe Petertonjes, and Kris Luci-Bernard came in ninth in a time of 1:44.11.

Matt Irving was 15th in the 200 freestyle race in 1:53.81. Petertonjes came in 16th in the 200 individual medley, making his final touch in 2:12.79. In the 50 free, Connor Kwarcinski was sixth in 22.31 and Max Luci-Bernard came in 17th in 22.85. Petertonjes was 16th in the 100 butterfly event, finishing in 58.42. Carson placed 21st in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.97.

In addition to Horan’s win in the 100 free, NHS took home 12th in the event as Kwarcinski finished in 50 seconds flat, and Matt Irving came in 24th in 51.72 seconds.

The 200 free relay team of Kwarcinski, Max Luci-Bernard, Petertonjes, and Irving was eighth in 1:31.88.

Newtown’s 400 free relay capped off the meet with a strong finish, placing fourth as Kwarcinski, Max Luci-Bernard, Irving, and Horan clocked in at 3:17.98.
