BROOKFIELD — The Brookfield Theatre is currently presenting a sassy and bold Shirley Valentine, by Willy Russell, for its late winter offering. Directed by the inimitable Jane Farnol, this production provides insight into sudden life changes which are totally transformative.

The eponymous Shirley Valentine is played by Susan Pettibone in a one woman tour de force.

During the play, Shirley channels her frustration into escape and reinvention. Jetting off to the Greek Islands with a girlfriend, leaving her husband behind completely in the dark as to her whereabouts, Shirley revels in her newfound sense of freedom.

Speaking for all who have come to a point in life where things need a good shaking up, Shirley shows the audience how it’s done, with verve and impulsivity.

Pettibone renders her Shirley with humor and a childlike perspective. She levels her frustration and boredom at the wall in her kitchen and the food on the stove. She plans her escape with an air of glee and deceit, all of which appears authentic.

A one-woman show is a substantial undertaking, and Pettibone does not miss a beat. She keeps her energy up and her eye on the prize.

In the end, the audience has been treated to the wisdom and spunk of Shirley Valentine, as she sets about to actually live her life.

Farnol’s direction is spot on while leaving the door open to Pettibone’s considerable talent.

This funny and inspiring piece at Brookfield Theatre is a great night out, and Pettibone is not to be missed!

Performances continue to March 26, with curtain Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoon, March 20. Contact the box office at 203-775-0023 or visit brookfieldtheatre.org for additional information and reservations.
