Track Team Members Shine In New England And National Events

Newtown High School track team members had stellar performances in New England and National competitions, with records set along the way, during the first two weekends of March.

Riley Powers and Soheib Dissa competed in the New England Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center in Boston on March 4. Powers ran the 600 meter event and finished in third place with a time of 1:35.38, a new PR and school record, earning her the distinction of All New England. Dissa ran the 1000 and finished ninth with a time of 2:33.54.

During the second weekend of March more Nighthawks competed in the New Balance Nationals Indoor meet at The Track at New Balance in Boston. On Friday, Powers once again took the track in the Rising Stars 1 Mile and the Championship 400. Powers ran a PR time of 5:14.87 in the mile, earning her 14th place, and recorded a PR time of 59.63 in the 400, earning her 57th place. Later that evening both the boys and the girls had a Sprint Medley Relay compete in the Rising Stars Division. Oliver Guzy (200), Aydyn Gonzalez (200), Caleb Smith (400), and Dissa (800) finished 12th with a time of 3:39.44. Ella Hall (200), Rachel Albrecht (200), Hannah Snayd (400), and Powers (800) finished sixth with a time of 4:15.51.

On Saturday, Smith competed in the Championship Pentathlon finishing 15th with a score of 2948. Dissa competed in the Rising Stars 800 and posted a 1:56.56, earning him the fourth-place spot and setting a new school record.
