‘Be Watchful, Concerned’

To the Editor:

Affordable housing is a major consideration and an ongoing effort for everyone, for all governing levels, with all properties developed and undeveloped being subject to whatever percentages and regulations currently apply, with more to come, I think you can be sure — especially from the state and/or the federal government.

Regulations exist for setbacks, square footage, occupancy, service — common sense, but my concerns are for additionals, particularly for residential areas where, I feel, sight lines, character, and property values for neighbors, for neighborhoods matter.

Accessory apartments currently allow for two adults. Does that relate to the possibility of two cars, parking, a driveway, a garage, a teenager, an office, a dumpster? Is the water and septic adequate? Lighting? All that living requires. Living area square footage permitted is now at nine hundred — that’s a small house or cottage. Are the neighbors’ “rights,” their environment being affected negatively?

Property boundaries, mortgaged or paid for, legally end at the wall, and/or at the marker in the ground. But just as valued is what goes on “above and beyond.” We need to be watchful, concerned. Think Fairfield Hills, too!
