Brighton Karvoski has assembled quite a wrestling career already. The Newtown 13-year-old, who competes for Regional Training Center out of Danbury and has won national, regional, and state titles, followed up his fifth state crown with his third straight Youth New England Wrestling Championship win. What’s more, this young grappler also won the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award for his age division in the March 12 New England competition, held at Starland Sportsplex & Fun Park in Hanover, Mass. As if that is not impressive enough, consider this: Karvoski competes in the 15U division at 81 pounds, meaning at any given time he is up against older wrestlers.

Karvoski’s team placed second in the New England competition. Newtown’s Jake Maddox (15U, 136 pounds) and Mathew Stoerzinger (12U, 92 pounds) also won individual championships to help the Regional Training Center squad place second.

Taking on the top wrestlers from throughout New England is quite an experience for Karvoski, his teammates, and their competitors.

“To be honest, it’s stressful yet exciting at the same time because I know that every wrestler that makes it to New Englands has to be good to qualify. To qualify, you have to win or at least place at states in order to compete at New Englands. The whole experience is exciting,” Karvoski said.

After a first-round bye, Karvoski won via pin in 13 seconds in the second round and again with a pinfall triumph in 1:13 of the third round. In the finals, he won an 8-0 major decision over Chase Kastner of Ascension Wrestling. Kastner is a familiar foe; Karvoski defeated him for the state title as well.

Karvoski’s state championship came in the 83 pound weight class in the Middle School Division, at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, on February 27.

In the state competition, after a first-round bye, Karvoski won via pin in 20 seconds in the second round, won a 9-1 major decision in the third round to advance to the finals, and defeated Kastner in a 9-0 major decision. Although Karvoski has several titles under his belt, competing in the Middle School Division for the first time made for a challenging run to the top.

“It was definitely harder this year. Particularly during my semis and finals matches. Those two wrestlers were really tough competitors,” Karvoski said.

Winning is a good feeling for this grappler.

“It feels awesome. Especially when I have my whole team and parents rooting for me. It is definitely a good feeling,” Karvoski said. “I am a really competitive person so every match is a challenge which is something I enjoy. Some matches can be more challenging than others so when I win a really tough match, that is what I enjoy the most about wrestling. The awards are really nice too.”
