Two-Vehicle Crash

A 1999 GMC K 1500 Suburban being operated by Salvatore Manganaro, 83, of Newtown, was traveling southbound on South Main Street, approaching the signal at Sand Hill Plaza, around 11:57 am Monday, March 1.

At the same time, a 2007 Toyota Camry being operated by Tammy M. Stachura, 50, of Millbury, Mass., was making a left turn from the commercial driveway of Sand Hill Plaza, to travel northbound on South Main Street.

Manganaro told Newtown police that as he was traveling he observed he had a green light at the intersection. Manganaro stated the Toyota pulled out in front of his vehicle from the driveway. He said the front of the Toyota struck his vehicle.

Stachura stated she observed she had a green light and made a left turn onto South Main Street. She told police that the Suburban had struck her vehicle.

A witness told police they observed the Suburban drive through a steady right light and struck the Toyota. The witness further stated the traffic light was also showing a green arrow, and they felt Manganaro may have mistaken it for a green light.

There was damage to both vehicles, but neither needed to be towed from the scene.

Both drivers were transported to Danbury Hospital for injuries. Botsford Fire Rescue and Newtown Hook & Ladder firefighters also responded to the crash.

Manganaro was given a verbal warning for violation of traffic control signals.

A 2015 Chevrolet Traverse operated by Elizabeth Silva, 32, of Newtown, was also traveling northbound on South Main Street, directly behind the Durango.

Silva attempted to pass the Durango on the left prior to the clearly posted left turn only lane. The front right corner of the Traverse struck the left rear corner of the Durango.

The vehicles moved to the corner of Glover Avenue and South Main Street prior to the arrival of police.

Silva was issued a written warning for passing in a no passing area and an infraction ticket for failure to change her address.

Swamp Road-South Main Collision

A 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek being operated by Walda A. Salomons, 80, was making a left turn around 1:42 pm, Wednesday, March 3, from Swamp Road onto South Main Street to travel southbound.

Salomons told police she believed it was safe to make the turn.

Her vehicle was struck during the turn, however, by a 2009 Nissan Altima traveling north, operated by Dominic R. Consiglio, 23, of East Haven.

There was damage to both vehicles. No injuries were reported.

Salomons was given a verbal warning for failing to obey a stop sign.

A 2014 Toyota Tundra Double Cab SR operated by Christopher Haggerty, 57, also traveling north behind the two vehicles, did not stop. The Toyota hit the rear of the Silverado, which in turn was pushed into the rear of the Sonata.

As the vehicle approached Pebble Road, it failed to negotiate a right curve in the roadway and continued straight, crossing over the northbound travel lane. The truck continued southbound, off the northbound side of the roadway. The driver side mirror and driver side of the truck struck a Frontier utility pole.

The truck then continued off the roadway, and the driver side struck several small trees before going into a ditch on the property of 1 Old Gate Lane, completely off the roadway.

At the same time, a 2001 Mazda Familia being operated by Margaret R. French, 24, had stopped at the end of the driveway of 12 Sugar Street, intending to turn left out of the driveway.

French told police that she had her car in park at the end of her driveway due to the angle of her driveway, while waiting for traffic to clear. A witness who was traveling eastbound on Sugar Street saw French in her vehicle, attempting to leave her driveway. The male witness told police he stopped his vehicle on Sugar Street, in traffic, and left enough room for the Mazda to enter the roadway.

French stated that she saw the witness stop for her. She said she looked both ways and did not see any vehicles coming so she shifted her vehicle into drive and began to turn left onto Sugar Street. As she accelerated onto Sugar Street, French’s car struck the Honda being operated by Giusti.

Giusti told police that he saw French pull out in front of him, and he attempted to avoid the accident but could only move over so much due to traffic. The Honda came to rest off-road on the westbound shoulder.

French was issued a verbal warning for making a restricted turn. Both vehicles were able to be driven away from the scene. There were no injuries.
