Motorcycle DUI

Police said they received a report informing them that an apparently intoxicated man had fallen off the motorcycle that he was riding on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Toddy Hill Road, at about 6:44 pm on March 15, so they went there to investigate.

The police investigation found that Joseph Sylvester, 62, of Ansonia, was intoxicated, so they charged him with driving under the influence. Sylvester was not injured.

After arrest processing, police released Sylvester on $1,000 bail for an arraignment on the charge on April 15 in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury.

Dodgingtown Collision

Police report an accident that involved three vehicles and a deer about 10:22 am on March 14 on Dodgingtown Road near the Bethel town line.

Police said that the driver of a noncontact vehicle, who was traveling westward on Dodgingtown Road, stopped abruptly for a deer in the roadway, but struck the animal with the vehicle’s front bumper.

A westbound 2014 Honda Civic sedan driven by Douglas Downes, 62, of Woodbury, which was traveling behind the noncontact vehicle, then stopped suddenly and did not hit the noncontact vehicle. But the Civic was then struck from behind by westbound motorist Paul Osakwe, 47, of Wilton, who was driving a 2013 GMC Terrain SUV, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Osakwe a written warning for following too closely resulting in an accident.

Electric Bicycle

Police said the owner of an electric bicycle informed them at about 6:30 pm on March 13 that his iZiP-brand SIMI electric bicycle had been stolen. The dark gray bicycle with 26-inch wheels was stolen from behind the Big Y supermarket at 6 Queen Street sometime between 6 pm on Wednesday, March 11, and 5 pm on Friday, March 13. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Two Warrants

Newtown police report they traveled to Waterbury on March 11 and served a warrant there against Miguel Blanchette, 32, of Danbury, charging him with criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny in connection with his alleged attempt to steal items in 2019 from the Stop & Shop supermarket at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street in Botsford.

Also, Newtown police learned that there was a warrant pending against Blanchette for second-degree failure to appear in court in connection with underlying motor vehicle charges filed against him in 2019 by Ansonia police.

After arrest processing on both charges, Newtown police released Blanchette on bail for March 25 and March 26 court appearances in Danbury and Derby, respectively.

SUV Vs SUV

An accident involving two SUVs occurred about 3:39 pm on March 11 in front of Walgreen’s Pharmacy at 49 South Main Street.

Police report that motorist Hunter Brunetti, 21, of Newtown, was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer SUV northward on South Main Street, as motorist Alfred Scaia, 85, of Readsboro, Vt., who was driving a 2007 Toyota Highlander SUV, was attempting to exit the Walgreen’s property and turn left to head southward on South Main Street.

After the Toyota drove in front of the oncoming Ford, the two vehicles collided. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps treated Brunetti at the scene. Hook & Ladder firefighters went to the accident. Police verbally warned Scaia for failure to grant the right of way. Police verbally warned Brunetti for driving an unregistered vehicle.

Shopping Cart

Police are seeking the public’s help for information in their investigation of an incident that occurred about 1:26 pm on Tuesday, March 10, in the parking lot near Caraluzzi’s Market at 5 Queen Street.

Police said that a female walking in the parking lot with a shopping cart was almost struck by an erratically driven Subaru. The auto did strike the victim’s shopping cart and the victim was very upset, but not physically injured.

After the impact, the driver got out of the Subaru to ask if the victim was okay, after which the driver drove out of the lot, heading southward on Queen Street.

The driver was described as a white woman in her 50s who has dyed, bright red hair. Police ask any witnesses to the incident to contact them at the police station at 203-426-5841 in regard to Case #20-6078.
