Water Safety Instructor Course: Will be held Mondays and Thursdays, 6 to 9 pm, at Newtown High School, starting April 25. Participants must be at least 16 by the conclusion of the course. A water safety instructor teaches children of all ages how to swim and Parks and Recreation is constantly in need of instructors. In order to become a Red Cross certified instructor, candidates must demonstrated Red Cross Level V swim ability. Fee is $225 for resident and $250 for non-resident.

Basic Open Water Scuba: Will be held Wednesdays (classroom) and Thursdays (pool), 7:30 to 10:30 pm, at Newtown High School, starting April 6. Open to those ages 12 and over. Fee is $185 for eight courses with an additional fee, payable to the instructor, of $40 (gear rental for check out dives) and $30 (instructor fee for check out dives). Students will need mask, snorkel and fins (scuba gear for pool training will be provided). Certification is through Scuba School International. A junior certification will be issued to students under 14 years of age.

Athletic Development Training: Techniques and drills taught in this camp will increase overall speed and athleticism of the athlete. Strength training and flexibility will also be addressed. The program serves as a compliment to athletes currently involved in sports or preparing for upcoming seasons. Instructor Cody Foss has worked with teen athletes for more than 10 years and has experience with Olympic and professional athletes. The eight-session training will be for athletes in grades 6 through 12 and will be held Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30 to 6:30 pm, at the Head ‘O Meadow School field starting June 27.

Rowing Camp: Learn all about this fast-growing sport. Participants will be introduced to the basics of the rowing stroke and will be familiarized with the boar or “rowing shell” and be taught how to launch and get in and out of the boat. All equipment will be provided. Wear sneakers, clothes suitable for working out, and bring a water bottle. Each session will be two weeks (Mondays through Thursdays) and the first one will be May 2 through May 12, 5:30 to 7:30 pm, at the GMS Rowing Center in the Bleachery Building, 143 West Street, Unit X, New Milford. Fee is $190 per person, per session.
