Gender Issues For People

With Disabilities

NEW HAVEN — The Southern Connecticut State University department of social work will present the annual Aavo Rakfeldt Memorial Lecture — “From Girl to Woman to Elder: Gender Issues for People with Disabilities throughout the Life Cycle” — on Tuesday, April 13, at 5 pm.

The lecture will be delivered by Harilyn Rousso, LCSW, executive director of Disabilities Unlimited Consulting Services, an organization that provides consultation, training, and research on disability equity issues to promote equal opportunity for people with disabilities.

Ms Rousso’s presentation will examine the impact of gender on women and girls with disabilities, covering such topics as self-esteem, body image, sexuality, parenting, violence, education, employment, health care, and aging. It will also consider programmatic strategies designed to address the multiple barriers facing disabled women and girls.

The lecture, which will be preceded by refreshments at 4:30 pm, will take place in the SCSU Student Center faculty dining room. For more information, contact Nicole Philibert, department of social work at 203-392-6573.
