The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning for southern Connecticut. The warning will be in effect from midnight Saturday until 2 pm Sunday, April 3.

The weather outlook covers all of Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex and New London counties in Connecticut, along with portions of New York state.

The Weather Service is predicting for late Saturday night and into Sunday morning: "low weather accompanied by an arctic cold front will sweep southeast of the area Sunday morning.

"West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph will be accompanied by snow showers and snow squalls. White out conditions may briefly occur in squalls."

By Sunday evening, "subfreezing temperatures are forecast across most suburban and rural locations. Protect sensitive plants and bring them indoors if possible."

Trees and power lines may be downed, the weather service advises.

A High Wind Warming means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring, according to NWS's website. "Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage."

Meanwhile, the weather service is also watching a fast-moving low pressure system of Canadian origin that is expected to move across the Great Lakes today, bringing rain changing to snow for many areas as the system passes.

"The system will begin to move into the Appalachians and Northeast by this evening, and rain will mix with or change to snow across much of the Northeast Saturday night," the NWS had posted Saturday afternoon.

The wind that is expected to arrive in this area during the overnight and into Sunday morning is forecast to "quickly move out to sea on Sunday, with another, low pressure system crossing the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes in its wake.

"This second system will bring another round of rain and snow to many of the same areas of the

Northeast Sunday night into Monday," the weather service continued in a statement posted at 2:51 am April 2.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for Fairfield, Litchfield, New Haven, and Hartford Counties through 10 pm July 1.
