Ryan Fetchick, a 19-year-old Sandy Hook resident, was fatally injured Sunday, April 2, when a Ford Excursion Limited SUV slipped from a jack in the family's driveway, hitting him before rolling into a neighboring home. Mr Fetchick was employed as a mechanic in Monroe.

According to Newtown Police Lieutenant Aaron Bahamonde, at approximately 10:30 am, Newtown Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a man had been run over by a vehicle in the driveway of his residence.

Family members were at home at the time and called 911, police said.

Newtown Police responded to the Indian Hill Lane location, along with crews from Sandy Hook Fire & Rescue and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Upon arrival responders found the severely injured man lying in the driveway. The first officers to arrive attempted to provide first aid and CPR to him, but a paramedic pronounced him dead on scene.

An investigation is ongoing, but police will say that at this time it appears the death was the result of a tragic accident.

Lt Bahamonde said it appeared Mr Fetchick was working on his personal vehicle in the driveway of the residence using a heavy-duty jack lift, when the vehicle broke loose from its lifted position and rolled over him, causing his death.

The lieutenant told

The Newtown Bee that the drive shaft had been removed from the Ford Excursion SUV, and it was about to be towed. As a result, he said there was no mechanical means in place to prevent the SUV from rolling downward from the house, which is on an elevated lot.

The vehicle, which Lt Bahamonde said was parked with its tailgate against a garage door, continued to roll down the driveway and across Indian Hill Lane where it crashed, unoccupied, into a neighbor's residence directly across the street.

The State of Connecticut Medical Examiner was called to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Lt Bahamonde praised the volunteer fire and ambulance responders, "who rushed to the scene on a quiet Sunday morning," only to come upon the victim who could not be helped.
