Did Not See Car With Camera

Newtown Police report Nidhi Sharma, 28, of Jersey City, N.J., operating a 2022 Toyota 4Runner, was backing towards a parking space in the lot at 26 Hawleyville Road at 5:13 pm March 17. Joshua Troiano, 40, of Hawleyville, operating a 2001 Dodge Stratus, was parked in a parking space. The rear right bumper of Sharma’s vehicle struck the middle rear bumper of Troiano’s vehicle. Sharma said she was backing up using the back up camera in the vehicle and did not see Troiano’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Hit Fire Hydrant

Newtown Police report Julio Cordero, 24, of New Milford, operating a 2015 Honda Civic, was traveling westbound on Riverside Road at 4:40 am March 19. Cordero went off the roadway, striking a fire hydrant. Police say Cordero then continued down Riverside Road, leaving the scene, where he was located and stopped by police.

No injuries were reported. Cordero’s vehicle was towed.

Cordero was arrested on the charge of operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and evading responsibility.

Hit Tree, Then Into Embankment

Newtown Police report Luz Knapp, 62, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2017 Honda CR-V, was traveling westbound on Lakeview Terrace Road at 7:21 am March 20. Knapp ran off the roadway to the right, striking a tree, and then went down an embankment where the vehicle rolled over on its side. Police say Knapp was removed from the vehicle from the driver’s side front window.

Knapp was checked by Newtown EMS on scene and transported to Danbury Hospital for further medical evaluation. The vehicle was towed.

Knapp was issued a verbal warning for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Forgery Arrest

Newtown Police, at 12:23 pm March 21, arrested Darren Brown, 56, of Bayshore, N.Y., after receiving a complaint from Union Savings Bank that an individual was impersonating a patron of the bank.

Union Savings Bank employees had been alerted to Brown going in to other banks in the area earlier in the day, trying to obtain statements and money by using false identification cards. The employees state that they immediately contacted police when Brown arrived at the bank.

Police say upon the officers’ arrival, Brown refused to provide his correct name and date of birth. He was found to be in possession of a fake US Passport Card. Patrol officers arrested him and transported him to Newtown Police Department.

Brown refused to be processed and was held in police custody on a $250,000 bond. He was charged with first-degree forgery, criminal impersonation, first-degree identity theft, criminal attempt at third-degree larceny, and interfering with an officer.

He was listed as “John Doe” and transported to Danbury Superior Court on March 22, where the court was able to identify him.

F-150 Hits Odyssey

Newtown Police report Barrera Rodriguez, 40, of Bridgeport, operating a 2015 Ford F-150, was traveling southbound on Hawleyville Road at 3:45 pm March 22. Hyejin Lee, 46, of Brookfield, operating a 2016 Honda Odyssey, was traveling southbound on Hawleyville Road ahead of Rodriguez. Lee began to slow down and the front bumper of Rodriguez’s vehicle struck the rear bumper of Lee’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Rodriguez was issued an infraction for following too closely.

Passing On The Right

Newtown Police report that Calie Armijos, 24, of Danbury, operating a 2008 Acura RDX, was traveling eastbound on Hattertown Road at 8:02 am March 22. He was traveling behind a 2019 Kia Candenza operated by Serbio Tuba-Chacho, 38, of Danbury. Police say Tuba-Chacho stopped at the intersection of Sugar Street, and Armijos veered to the right of Tuba-Chacho’s vehicle, but side-swiped it on the way by.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Armijos received a verbal warning for passing on the right.

Cash Found

Newtown Police report that on March 22, a citizen turned in money which had been located near 53 Osborne Hill Road that day at approximately 4 pm. Anyone with information can contact Sgt Doug Wisentaner at 203-426-5841.

Struggled With Stick Shift

Newtown Police report Jack Ringeisen, 16, of Woodbury, operating a 2017 Kia Forte, was making a left turn to exit the parking lot of 5 Queen Street at 4:48 pm March 22. After beginning the turn, Ringeisen attempted to reverse, and his vehicle struck a 2019 Nissan Sentra operated by Joseph Santacroce, 41, of Newtown. Ringeisen said he was shifting gears in his manual transmission vehicle and unintentionally put the vehicle in reverse.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Back Up Leads To Contact

Newtown Police report Giovana Deoliveira, 20, of Newtown, operating a 2023 Land Rover Range Rover, was traveling southbound on Edmond Road at the intersection of Church Hill Road at 12:20 pm March 23. James O’Bryan, 52, of Newtown, operating a 2006 Mercedes E500, was traveling southbound on Edmond Road behind Deoliveira. An uninvolved tractor trailer was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road and attempted to turn northbound onto Edmond Road. Police say Deoliveira attempted to back up to avoid possible contact with the tractor trailer and the rear end of his vehicle struck the front end of O’Bryan’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Deoliveira was issued a written warning for unsafe backing.

Motor Vehicle Theft

Newtown Police were dispatched at 5:33 pm March 24 to Sand Hill Plaza for a report of an individual passed out inside a motor vehicle parked in the lot. Following an investigation, the vehicle had been reported stolen by the West Haven Police Department on March 23. Police say the occupant of the vehicle, Glenn London, 59, of Yorktown, Va., was arrested without incident and taken to the Newtown Police Department for processing. London was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle — first offense, and three counts of second-degree failure to appear. He was held on a total of $45,000 in bonds with a court date of March 27 in Danbury Superior Court.

Went Airborne, Hit Pole

Newtown Police report Dafina Mustafa, 18, of Newtown, operating a 2016 Subaru Impreza, was traveling northbound on Boggs Hill Road at 7:45 pm March 24. While entering a left curve in the roadway, Mustafa went off the right shoulder of the roadside into an embankment. Police say the vehicle continued to travel on the embankment, going airborne and rotating, and striking a utility pole on its side, across the front windshield. The vehicle rotated around the pole, coming to rest on its side in the embankment.

Mustafa and a passenger were transported to Danbury Hospital with possible injuries. The vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was mentioned in the report.

DUI Arrest

Newtown Police arrested Javier Armijos, 30, of Newtown, at 8:01 pm March 25, on the charges of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to drive in the proper lane, and operation of a motor vehicle without a license. He was released on a $500 bond with a court date of April 11.

Fender Bender In Parking Lot

Newtown Police report Tevis Huber, 25, of Newtown, operating a 2008 Toyota Prius, was parked in a marked parking spot, facing west, in the lot of 30 Church Hill Road at 11:33 am March 26. Gabriella Ferrara, 16, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2015 Lexus ES, was parked in a marked parking spot, facing east, across the travel portion of the lot. Huber backed from his spot when the passenger side rear bumper of his vehicle hit the driver’s side of Ferrara’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Struck Mailbox

Newtown Police report David Woolfolk, 32, of Bridgeport, operating a 2019 Ford Transit rental truck, was backing into the driveway at 28 Cedar Hill Road at 7:44 pm March 26, and backed into the mailbox.

No injuries were reported. No damage was reported to the vehicle.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Interfering With An Officer

Newtown Police report Kimberly Syphrette, 29, of Bridgeport, was arrested at 9:53 pm March 27 on the charges of disorderly conduct, interfering with an officer/resisting arrest, and assault of a safety/emergency medical/transit/health personnel. She was released on a $15,000 bond with a court date of April 11.

Newtown Police begin checking the scene of a two-car crash on Sugar Street/Route 302 near its intersection with Elm Drive shortly before 8 am Tuesday, March 28. According to the police report, the 2012 Ford Escape shown here was being operated by April E. Costenoble, 31, of Newtown, traveling east on Sugar Street. A 2015 Volvo XC70 wagon that had been traveling north on Elm Drive, operated by Kimberly C. Sheridan, 49, of Newtown, stopped for the stop sign at the intersection with Sugar Street. The Volvo then entered the intersection to turn left while the Escape was entering the left turn only lane. The front of the Volvo hit the passenger side front tire of the Ford, causing damage to both vehicles. The Volvo was then moved into the lower driveway of The Pleasance, beyond the frame of this photo, Newtown Hook & Ladder and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the crash. Both drivers were checked for injuries; neither went to the hospital. Both vehicles were towed due to damage. Sheridan was issued a written warning for failure to grant right of way at a stop sign. —Bee Photo, Hicks
