The Friends of the Library are currently accepting donations for their Labor Day Book Sale. Please leave your books on the cart on the first floor.

Good news for those of you with CD players in your cars and faced with a long commute each morning. There is a wonderful new collection of books on CD available at the library through a generous donation from the Friends of the Library. With close to 50 new titles there’s bound to be something you haven’t read yet. Please come check them out.

Children’s Programs

Easter Craft Workshop:     Marie Walker will conduct an Easter craft workshop for children 6 and older on Saturday, April 8, from 11 am to noon at the library. Sign up for the program now. No phone registrations will be accepted. A $2 material fee is due upon registration.

Celebrate National Library Week! On Wednesday, April 12, at 6:30 pm, the Friends of the C.H. Booth library will sponsor a special storytelling and musical program by Mary Jo Maichak. Ms Maichak will perform “The Tailor” and “The Paper Bag Princess,” using song, dance, and drama to entertain her audience. Please mark your calendars and don’t miss this fun-filled family program. Recommended for children 4 and older. Seating is limited to the first 75.

Adult Programs

On Sunday, April 9, there will be an art show opening and reception celebrating the art of Stella Bloch from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. The show will remain open to the public until April 25 during regular library hours.

 The deadline for filing your taxes is April 15. Free tax assistance is available at the library for one more week. If you’d like some help drop by on Tuesday, April 11 from 1 to 5 pm. No appointment is necessary.

On Monday, April 10, the Newtown Historical Society will present a program and lecture on “Colonial Taverns.” The talk will begin at 7:30 pm in the meeting room. The public is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.

 Is American History your bag? Bill Barrante will be returning to the library to give a four-part talk on the Civil War and some of its more colorful characters. On Tuesday, April 11, Bill will talk about “John Hunt Morgan; the Confederate raider, cavalier of the South, and hero of the ‘Lost Cause.’” He will speak aboiut Morgan’s bold escape from an Ohio prison and share stories about this archetypal Southern gentleman who charmed both the ladies and Union officers. On Tuesday, April 18, Mr Barrante will discuss “Stonewall Jackson.” On Tuesday, April 25, the topic will be “Battle of Cold Harbor,” and on Wednesday, May 3, it will be a philosophical discussion on the American Civil War – “The Right of Secession and the ‘Lost Cause.’” All talks will begin at 7 pm in the meeting room of the library. Please sign up at the circulation desk. All talks are free and refreshments will be served.

 The Booth Library Book Discussion Group will be discussing The Pilot’s Wife by Anita Shreve on Thursday, April 13, at 7:30 pm. You need not read the entire book to attend. New members are always welcome.

 A new movie series will be starting on Friday, April 14, celebrating “Movie Musicals of the 40s and 50s.” The first movie in the series will be Easter Parade (1948). This delightful Irving Berlin musical is about Fred Astyaire trying to forget his ex-dance partner, Miller, while rising to stardom with Garland.

The Friends of the Library are sponsoring an exciting new book discussion series. The next book to be discussed in the series will be One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey on April 18. Please call the library if you’d like to join in this discussion. You need not read the entire book to attend.

Bob Brand will be offering more Internet classes in April. A beginners class will take place on Saturday, April 15, from 10:00 am to noon. Please register ahead at the circulation desk. An intermediate class will be held on Saturday, April 22 also from 10:00 to noon. A $10 supply fee is charged for this course, and pre-registration is a must.
