Canaan House Vandalism

Police report that sometime on the night of March 19 or early morning of March 20, someone threw an object through an exterior window at Canaan House at Fairfield Hills, breaking that window and also breaking a pane of glass in an interior door. The town government and public schools have offices in the building.

The vandalism constitutes third degree criminal mischief. Police are investigating and ask anyone with information on the crime to contact them at 426-5841.

Probation Charge

Newtown police said that after Waterbury police learned that Thomas Beck, 17, of Waterbury was wanted by Newtown police on a warrant, Waterbury police detained Beck at about 2 am March 28.

Newtown police then went to Waterbury and charged Beck with violation of probation in connection with a past Newtown incident.

Newtown police held Beck on a $20,000 bond for a court appearance later that day in Danbury Superior Court.

Plumtrees Sideswipe

Police report a two-truck accident at about 12:20 pm March 25 on Plumtrees Road.

Motorist Joseph Bromley, 19, of 79 Mt Pleasant Road, who was driving a 1999 Toyota pickup truck, was involved in a sideswipe collision with motorist Jorge Burgos, 25, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 1997 Ford pickup truck in the opposite direction, police said. The accident occurred near 25 Plumtrees Road.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported both men to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, according to police.

Police said they issued Bromley an infraction ticket for failure to drive to the right.

Sandy Hook Rear-Ender

While stopped at a red light on Mile Hill Road, at its intersection with Route 34 at about 2 pm March 25, motorist Jessica Schwartz, 23, of 8 Old Gate Lane, who was driving a 1986 Volkswagen Cabriolet, accidentally took her foot off the Volkswagen’s brake pedal and rolled forward into the rear end of a stopped 1995 Jeep Wrangler driven by Paul Watcke, 22, of 30 Valley View Road, police report.  

Watcke mentioned back pain, but refused medical treatment, police said. Police said they gave Schwartz a written warning for following too closely.

Playground Gear

Sometime between March 21 and 24, someone entered the Newtown Congregational Church nursery school playground at 41-A Main Street and stole some swings from a swing frame. Police ask anyone with information about the case of sixth degree larceny to contact them at 426-5841.

Berkshire Crash

Motorist Anthony Mason, 18, of 50 Deep Brook Road, who was driving a 2000 Ford F-250 pickup truck southward on Berkshire Road at about 2 pm March 24, stopped and was waiting to turn left into the driveway of Berkshire Motors, when he was struck by motorist Chris Espy, 18, of 13 Stonewall Ridge, who was driving a 2001 Ford Taurus, which had exited the Newtown High School driveway, police said.

There were no injuries. Police gave Espy a written warning for following too closely.

High School

Motorist Jacqueline Ruiz, 18, of 88 The Boulevard, who was driving a 1998 Dodge Durango sport-utility vehicle, turned to the left onto Berkshire Road after exiting the Newtown High School driveway at about 9:19 pm March 26, and was struck by a vehicle, which then left the scene, police said.

The auto that drove away was described as an older blue or gray Jeeplike vehicle, which was driven by an approximately 30-year-old male with shaved blond hair. The vehicle’s registration plate starts with the letters “XP.” The vehicle would have damage to its left front area, police said.

Ruiz was not injured in the accident. Police are investigating.

Mercury Hits Tree

Motorist Todd Bolmer, Jr, 17, of 31 Swamp Road, who was driving a 1994 Mercury Sable eastward on Sugar Street about 2:04 am March 30, rounded a curve near Head Of Meadow Road and then lost control of the auto, police report.

 The Mercury skidded across the westbound lane, went off the westbound road shoulder and then struck a large tree, police said.

The right, front-seat passenger, Anthony Cologero, 18, of 46 Little Brook Lane, experienced head and arm pain in the crash, police said. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported him to Danbury Hospital for treatment, police said. Newtown Hook and Ladder firefighters went to the accident.

Police issued Bolmer an infraction ticket for failure to drive to the right.

Gravel Onto Volvo

State police report that motorist Donald Torrant, no age given, of Norfolk was driving a 1999 Volvo station wagon on westbound Interstate 84 at Rochambeau Bridge about 2 pm March 25, when a 1995 Ford dump truck driven by Vincent Falcioni, 54, of Bethel, which was traveling ahead of the Volvo, dropped some gravel onto the road. The falling gravel damaged the Volvo’s headlamp, hood, and windshield, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police said Falcioni was driving with an unsecured load.

Nissan Hits Rails

State police said motorist Victor Santagato, 28, of Jamesport, N.Y., who was driving a 2001 Nissan Maxima eastward on Interstate 84, about 7,500 feet east of Exit 9, at about 2 am March 29, went off the left side of the road and struck guardrailing.

Santagato was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, state police said. State police said Santagato was traveling too fast for conditions and failed to wear a seatbelt.

Bad Check

Police report they charged Joanne T. Osmolik, 43, of 277 South Main Street on a warrant on March 29, lodging one count of issuing a bad check. The charge stems from Osmolik allegedly having passed a bad check at a local business. Police released Osmolik on a $40 bond for an April 17 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Watch Found

Police are seeking the owner of a men’s wrist watch, which was found on March 28 in the Riverside section. Police said the watch was located on a hiking trail about 200 yards from Alpine Circle. The owner may contact police at 426-5841.
