Sunday Slo-Pitch Meeting

The Sunday Slo-Pitch Softball League will hold meeting on Wednesdays, April 9 and 23, at 7:30 pm, at the Edmond Town Hall. The league is attempting to form two new teams and individuals looking to hook on to a team can attend the meetings or call Tom Egan at 426-5136.

Women’s Softball Signups

The Newtown Women’s softball league will be having sign-ups in the upcoming week. Registration will be done by mail. Forms for signing up your team members will be located at several businesses – Karen’s Fitness Center, Yankee Discount Liquor Store, The Cyrenius Booth Library, Firehouse Eatery & Tap Room and Heirloom Creations. Any woman 18 years or older, living/working in Newtown is eligable to sign up. All new players are welcome. A $10 registration fee applies. If there are questions, please call Jody Murphy at 270-1776. Also, there will be a mandatory coaches meeting on Sunday, May 4, at 7:30 pm, at the Firehouse Eatery in Sandy Hook.

Babe Ruth Softball

Newtown Babe Ruth Softball will hold clinics on Saturday, April 5, at the Newtown Middle School (A and B gyms) for players registered in the U10, U12, and U14 divisions. All girls should report to the A Gym first (remember to bring your gloves and bats!). Representatives from the All Star Batting Range will instruct players in various aspects of the game. The times for the clinics are as follows – U10, 10:30 am to 12:30 pm; U12 and U14, 1-3 pm. There will also be a pitching clinic held on Sunday, April 6, in the Town Hall gym from 3:15 to 5:15 pm.  All registered players from all divisions who are interested in pitching, or interested in learning the basics, are invited to attend.

 

Softball (U14) Tryouts

The Newtown Heat traveling softball team is scheduling tryouts for the 2003 season. Newtown residency is not required. Call 426-5001 or 426-1886 for further information on the tryouts.

National Anthem Auditions

The Bridgeport Bluefish Class A baseball team will hold National Anthem auditions on Satuday, April 5, from 11 am to 4 pm, at The Klein in Bridgeport (for directions go to www.theklein.org). Register in advance by calling the Bluefish promotions office at 1-203-345-4800, ext. 104.

City Center Grand Prix

The City Center Grand Prix – a race for miniature cars attained speeds of 25 miles an hour – will be held on June 8 on the streets of Danbury. The Grand Prix will be the focal point of a day-long festival on the Danbury green featuring food, kids games, race car displays, and live music. WRKI-FM (I-95) will present the festival, which will benefit the American Red Cross of Western Connecticut.

 

WCSU Basketball Camp

The women’s basketball program at Western Connecticut State University will be sponsoring its 2003 Girls’ Basketball Hoop Camp July 28 through August 1, 9 am to 3:30 pm each day. Baseball 101

Kelley Franco will be presenting Baseball 101 on Friday, April 4, at 7 pm, at Backcountry Outfitters in Kent for all those people who are having trouble understanding the finer points of baseball. Franco will present the basic rules of the game plus 10 historical facts – including the Curse of the Babe, the Black Sox Scandal, and the so-called Shot Heard ‘Round the World. Namath Football Camp

The annual Joe Namath/John Dockery Instructional Football Camp will be held July 6-11 at Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts. A host of current and former National Football League players and coaches will be on hand. Call 1-866-626-2841 or email joenamath@hotmail.com for further information.

Youth Basketball Tournament

The North American Youth Sports association will hold its annual Youth Basketball Tournament April 11-13 at the Masters School in Hartford. There will be 10 different brackets – from 5th/6th grade boys to 11th/12th grade girls. Entry fee is $95 and guarantees each team at least two games. Entry deadline is March 17.
