Free Family Fishing Class

DERBY — Fishing is a great way to experience the outdoors and reconnect with family. The Kellogg Environmental Center is offering families a chance to get ready for fishing season’s opening day with a Connecticut Aquatic Recreation Education (CARE) class on Saturday, April 5, from 10 am to 2 pm.

Participants will learn where to fish, how to select bait, and how to identify a catch. There will also be opportunities to practice casting techniques and learn ways to help keep aquatic resources clean.

The program is open to adults and children. Children will need to have adult supervision during the program. Everyone will need to provide their own lunch.

Each participant will receive a copy of the angler guide for their use along with updates on laws and regulations.

The workshop will also offer a special exhibit of fish prints. Artist and angler Jack Brown will explain and demonstrate Gyotaku, the art of fish prints using ink and rice paper. An exhibit of his work will be on display through April at the Kellogg Environmental Center.

There is no fee for the program, but registration is requested so that materials can be prepared for all participants.

Kellogg Environmental Center, a facility of the Department of Environmental Protection, is at 500 Hawthorne Avenue. Call 734-2513 for registration or additional information.
