THOMAS CORDELL, JOE BRAINARD SHOWS AT FISCHBACH GALLERY APRIL 19 w/1 cut

avv/gs set 4-5 #695072

NEW YORK CITY — The Fischbach Gallery presents “On the Move,” recent paintings by Thomas Cordell, and Joe Brainard’s “If Nancy Was.” Both exhibitions are on view through May 19.

Cordell has produced a wide range of work encompassing exotic and rural settings, suburban vistas and cityscapes. His recent paintings specifically portray regions in Argentina, Brazil, France, Mexico, Portugal and The United States.

In “On the Move,” Cordell continues his examination of the manufactured in relation to the natural, envisioning urban and suburban architecture as a “natural” extension of the Earth’s surface.

Cordell was born in Nebraska in 1951. In 1974 he received his MA in architecture from the University of Nebraska and moved to New York City, where he worked as an architect. In 1992 he chose to paint full time and moved north to San Francisco, where he currently lives.

“If Nancy Was,” created in 1972, is a series of 20 mixed media works and is being shown in completion for the first time.

Brainard, born in 1942, grew up in Tulsa, Okla., where from an early age showed artistic talent, winning virtually every art contest he entered. He even designed his mother’s dresses. In late 1960 he moved to New York City, where he had his first solo exhibition only four years later. Subsequently he had many solo shows and took part in a great many group shows around the country and in Europe and Australia.

In 1971, Fischbach Gallery presented its first Joe Brainard solo exhibition. Fischbach Gallery presented numerous Brainard exhibitions until his death in 1994.

The Fischbach Gallery is at 210 Eleventh Avenue, between 24th and 25th Streets. For information, 212-759-2345 or www.fischbachgallery.com.
