Update: Moments after this article was posted, the baseball game was rescheduled to a date to be determined.

A few weeks ago, as spring sports athletes anxiously awaited a chance to get out and compete, the weather felt like mid-May, with temperatures even reaching the 70s. Now, as the regular campaign gets going, chilly, snowy, icy conditions greet the competitors as they begin game action.

Newtown High School's sports teams got the season going, as scheduled, with a pair of lacrosse games on Saturday, April 2, but all of the contests scheduled for Monday, April 4, were postponed when a mix of rain, snow, freezing rain, and hail coated the playing surfaces. As of the next morning, snow and ice still covered the playing surfaces and with temperatures still hovering around freezing, things weren't looking good for games to resume. But the sun helped melt away much of the snow, giving Newtown High Athletic Director Gregg Simon plenty of optimism that the baseball and lacrosse teams will play as expected.

Icy and wet surfaces at the Newtown High and Treadwell Park tennis courts, along with snow coating the Rock Ridge Country Club golf course, resulted in the tennis and golf matches being rescheduled.

"After such a great mid-March we are dealing with some extreme weather conditions, but the good news is that warmer weather will get here sooner than later," Simon notes. "And this will all be just a bad memory."

Last spring was challenging from the onset as snow covered the athletic facilities, forcing most of the tryouts to be held in less-optimal venues, indoors.

As of the early afternoon on Tuesday, the girls' lacrosse team is slated to host Brookfield at Treadwell Park, beginning at 3:45 pm, and the baseball team is set to take on visiting Staples of Westport, starting at 4:15 pm. The boys' lacrosse team will visit Brookfield at 5:15 pm.

The softball field had some snow and puddles but another day for things to dry up before the Nighthawks are scheduled to host Trumbull (Wednesday, April 6, at 4:15 pm).

All games are subject to change. For up-to-date schedule info, visit Newtown High's athletics webpage.
