At The Senior Center

To the Editor:

My grandparents ran a large chicken farm during their retirement years in the 1950s. It kept them very busy until they passed away. At the time I was a young girl. I never asked them if they were lonely for people their own age, and I never thought I would ever get that old, but time marches on for all people and here I am in my mid-60s, retired since last June.

I love the freedom to craft my own days after working and parenting for many years, but last summer I searched around for some structure, purpose, and community (needs all humans have) to add to my life, and I found these at the Senior Center of Newtown. It’s open to all who are over 60. The center offers many interesting things to experience and so many wonderful people to interact with. It’s a virtual tapestry of… painting class, card games, yoga, crafts and quilting, knitting, making cards for our troops, trips to various attractions around the area, tax help, safe driving classes, Zumba dancing class, meeting new people with like interests. Your choice! It also offers connections for us seniors to volunteer in the community.

Going to the Senior Center for the things we like to participate in has made my husband’s and my life far richer as we enjoy our retirement years. The only down side I see with the center is that it has become crowded and it’s sometimes difficult to attend the classes we enjoy. I sincerely hope that as the baby boomers start to retire, the Senior Center of Newtown will expand its offerings and that there will be an adequate facility to welcome as many seniors as would like to join the center.
