OâLeary Competes In Zone Championships
Newtownâs Ryan OâLeary swam for the Connecticut zone team at last weekendâs Eastern Zone short course swimming championships in Webster NY.
Only the top three swimmers in each event are selected to represent their state in this championship.
In total, 750 swimmers represented eastern states from Virginia to Maine.
OâLeary, a 10-year old fifth grader at the Reed School, swam the 50 yard freestyle event, the 100 free, 50 breaststroke, 100 and 200 individual medleys, and as part of three team relays.
OâLeary trains year round with the Brookfield Makos YMCA swim team and competes in both USA and YMCA swim meets throughout Connecticut.
He holds a Mako team record in the 50 free with a personal best time of 27.51.
Zones is the highest level of competition that youth swimmers can qualify for, and several of the boysâ records are held by Michael Phelps, and have stood unbroken since Phelps swam as a 10 year old, representing Maryland in 1996.
