Commerce Road Parcel Is Wrong For Proposed Development

To the Editor:

The Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary has, in the nine years since it took root on the 34 acres conveyed to the foundation by the State of Connecticut, become a place of serenity — a sanctuary for those seeking respite from daily strife, as well as a place where hikers, dog walkers, and horseback riders are able to share a love of nature.

Bordered by the Deep Brook and shaded woodlands, the CVH Animal Sanctuary has begun its journey toward constructing a beautiful living memorial to 6-year-old Catherine — one of 26 people murdered December 14, 2012 at Sandy Hook School.

At the sanctuary and wildlife refuge Newtown residents and those from afar have watched a skeletal structure stretch skyward, marking the spot where an education and animal rescue building will one day stand; where rustic benches provide resting places to watch the change of seasons over the hills and restored meadows; where a graceful stone retaining wall catches the rays of sun and reflects them back to all who wander there.

It is a peaceful environment that has welcomed thousands to learn more about the creatures beloved by young Catherine — from the tiniest insects to goats and horses; to bees and butterflies nourished by gardens that will in turn nourish those who are in need.

The CVH Animal Sanctuary is a property deserving respect that will be denied should a 171-unit residential development be allowed to rise on the grounds directly facing this environmental treasure and touchstone of kindness directed toward animals.

I am not opposed to senior housing or affordable housing, both of which are needed in our community. I am opposed to developments thoughtlessly situated, too expansive, and which detract from the space they occupy — as seems the 6-8 Commerce Road proposal depicted in graphics provided to the public at the March 22 IWC public hearing.

Teton Capital Company, which developed Church Hill Village on Church Hill Road, is scheduled to present to Planning & Zoning on April 6. A continuation of the IWC public hearing is scheduled April 12, 7:30 pm, at the Newtown Municipal Center.

“Tell your friends that I am kind,” is what we have heard was Catherine’s desire for creatures great and small.

Tell your friends that we must not let an unnecessarily intrusive, unattractive, and large development rise in the face of this beautiful space, detracting and disturbing the environment of which Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary is a part.

Sincerely,

Nancy K. Crevier

Newtown

I am confused, why is it wrong, it appears to be an available building lot? Teton is following the guidance on offsets with a generous reserve. The town has been openly looking to sell it, why not capitalize on the market?
