Many Helped Make Science Workshops A Success

To the Editor:

On March 25, the Newtown Junior Women’s Club and the Newtown Board of Education presented its 14th Annual Discovery Science Workshops at Newtown High School. We wish to thank all of our volunteers and donors whose generosity lets us provide the program free of charge to over 325 Newtown children.

A heartfelt thank you to our 35 leaders and their helpers who presented 33 workshops. Twenty-five middle and high school students came out on a Saturday morning to assist with escorting and babysitting leaders’ children, carrying supplies, and a host of other tasks needed that morning. Thank you to all of them.

We would also like to thank the following donors: Dunkin’ Donuts, Queen Street; Starbucks, Church Hill Road; Mocha, Glen Road; Bagel Delight; Big Y; and Cathy Robinson of Cadbury-Schweppes.

The faculty and staff of Newtown High School have been invaluable in creating the success of Discovery Science Workshops. Thank you to Arlene Gottesman, Rich Novia, Tom Kuroski, Jimmy Young and his staff, and Maryann Corbo for all your support.

Last but not least, thank you to all attendees who also contributed to our success by heartily supporting our Scholastic Book Fair. The proceeds help fund workshops, Back-to-School Backpack Program, and Tag-A-Gift.

We hope everyone enjoyed the morning of scientific exploration. We hope this spurs interest in learning about and understanding our natural world.

Sincerely,

Laurie Borst & Stacie Doyle
