Newtown High School Lists Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.

The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP, the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060 or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

Hartford Whalers Booster Club Scholarship — One scholarship of up to $1,000 is available to any graduating senior from Connecticut who plans on attending a four-year college with a hockey program. The scholarship is open to graduating seniors who have excelled in both the classroom and the hockey arena. The Career Center has applications, which are also available at www.whalerwatch.com. All applications must be completed by April 10.

Western Connecticut Umpires Association — A college scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who will be pursuing a college education and is on the varsity baseball team. The scholarship winner will be invited to the annual banquet in June. Applications and coach recommendations must be returned to the Career Center by May 12.

John M. Bailey Memorial Scholarship Award — Two scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded by the Connecticut Criminal Justice Educational & Charitable Association to high school seniors or undergraduates enrolled in college who plan to major in any of the public service fields of study such as criminal justice, education, fire study, nursing/medical, etc. The award is based on character, leadership qualities in the school and in the community, and scholastic aptitude. All application materials must be received no later than May 15. The Career Center has basic application information.

Milton Fisher Scholarship for Innovation and Creativity — This scholarship rewards and encourages local students with exceptional innovation and creative problem-solving skills. High school juniors and seniors from Connecticut are encouraged to apply. Applicants may also be any person entering an undergraduate degree program, vocational school or technical school or a student presently in the first year of study at an undergraduate degree program. The foundation will award between four and six scholarships of up to $5,000 each. Applications are available in the Career Center or may be downloaded from www.rbffoundation.org/Milton-fisher-scholarship/. Applications must be postmarked by June 1.
