Newtown Youth & Family Services (NYFS) will be offering two summer camp programs for children called Safety Town and Super Hero Camp.

Super Hero Camp

Children ages 5 and 6 years old will have the opportunity to live like a super hero during Super Hero Camp. The week-long program will run July 29 to August 2, from 9 am to noon each day.

Melissa Cercone, Marketing & Community Outreach Coordinator for NYFS, says the adventure program has super hero-themed crafts, obstacle courses, and games.

“Each day focuses on a different super hero like Batman, Superman, the Hulk, etc. Activities include super hero costume-making, freeze tag with spray bottles, mask and cape decoration, spider web toss, and more. By the end of the week, each kid will have developed their own unique super hero,” she explained.

Super Hero Camp is $95 per person.

Safety Town

Children ages 5 and 6 years old will also have the opportunity to learn important, life-saving lessons pertaining to a wide variety of topics at Safety Town Camp. Topics will include fire, water, traffic, bus, pedestrian, playground, poison, drug, and stranger safety.

This summer, there will be three week-long sessions for Safety Town that will run from 9 am to noon each day. Session one is scheduled for July 8 to July 12, session two is scheduled for July 15 to July 19, and session three is scheduled for July 22 to July 26.

According to Ms Cercone, the Safety Town model was originally founded in 1937 by Cleveland, Ohio, policeman Fred Boals and was adopted as a safety education program by NYFS in 2013.

“It combines classroom instruction and the use of a miniature town designed to provide a complete hands-on experience,” Ms Cercone said. “The miniature town has a fire house, police station, library, and even features the historic Newtown flagpole. Within this town, there are working traffic lights, crosswalks, bicycle lanes, and signs, which create an environment for children to practice what they have learned through constructive play.”

Safety Town sessions are $95 per person.

Financial assistance is available for Safety Town and Super Hero Camp. For more information about Newtown Youth & Family Services’ summer camps and to register, visit newtownyouthandfamilyservices.org or call 203-270-4335.
