Upcoming Newtown Continuing Education Programs Unveiled

Newtown Continuing Education recently announced upcoming programs available for residents and non-residents.

Newtown Continuing Education offers programs of all interests to community members so they can further expand skills, explore interests, and participate with others who share similar hobbies. Most classes take place at Newtown High School, and staff members are on-site during evening classes to help locate a classroom. Mosaic Garden Art — Offered April 13 to April 27 on Wednesdays from 10:30 am to 2 pm by Kelly Makuch Studio. As the weather warms, many think about ways to decorate their garden. In the warmth of a home-based studio, attendees will do just that. In this three-session class students will create a lovely mosaic piece that can either be used as a stepping stone or house marker. There is a $13 materials fee payable to the instructor at the class. All materials and tools provided. Limited to eight students. The Studio is not handicap accessible (stairs). Due to the duration of the class, please feel free to bring a lunch. Safety measures in response to COVID-19 are taken. Price is $85.

Researching Our Roots: Digging Deeper — Offered on Monday, April 18, from 6 to 8 pm at NHS. Genealogical research is both rewarding and challenging. Join instructor Sarah Miller as she shares tips and tools to help dig deeper into a family’s past. Miller will present a case study of how she solved a difficult family mystery, and will introduce international research. She will also discuss strategies to feel confident in sourcing research. Please bring any family documents and information available, as well as a tablet or laptop, for guided research time. Price is $45.

Belly Dance Fitness — Offered April 19 to June 7 on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at NHS. Calling all shapes and sizes. Strengthen the core and sculpt the trunk, arms, and legs while learning the basics of Middle Eastern Belly Dance. Basic choreography, along with pop and traditional Middle Eastern music, will have students dancing away the calories. Beautiful hip scarves and silk veils provided. Workout clothes are recommended. Bring a refillable water bottle. Price is $99.

Implementing the Genius Creative Skills of Leonardo da Vinci — Offered April 20 to May 4 on Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 pm at NHS. As a recognized and published researcher in the area of cognitive psychology, the instructor has completed a manuscript on Leonardo’s “mental operacy,” and would like to share some of the unknown secret skills that Leonardo da Vinci developed that produced incredible new understanding of scientific phenomena and remarkable works of art. This seminar could help students seek out new insights and perceptual skills that develop creative thinking. Price is $99.

Salsa — Offered April 20 to May 25 on Wednesdays from 8 to 8:55 pm at NHS. This salsa class will prepare students to look great on the dance floor alone or with a partner. No partner necessary. Great cardio and a fun way to get in shape. Learn and practice basic rhythm, basic patterns and figures, with dance technique. Sneakers or flat shoes recommended and wear comfortable clothing. Price is $95.

PowerPoint Features — Offered Thursday, April 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at NHS. This hands-on session picks up where the “Basics” class leaves off. The class will cover adding pictures and shapes to slides; adding “SmartArt” to slides; adding tables and charts to slides; setting up a slide show (including transitions and animations); and printing a presentation. The skills learned in this class will allow students to create much more dynamic presentations. Price is $45.

Creating a Resume: Development & Strategy — Offered May 17 to May 24 on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 pm at NHS. For a job seeker, career changer, or a lifelong learner, this course will teach how to strategically tailor a resume to a chosen position or field. Students will also receive one-on-one resume advice and leave with a fully functional resume. Bring a laptop to the workshop. Price is $100.

Summer School Enrichment/Credit Recovery Programs — As a reminder, summer school enrollment is underway. Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis, and if the student has been recommended to attend a program, register early, space is limited. Payment is due at the time of registration.
