Newtown Lions Club will conduct a month-long, town-wide food drive to help local food pantries.

The local chapter will have a collection box located within Newtown Community Center, 8 Simpson Street, from Monday, April 19, through Saturday, May 15. Donations will be accepted any time the building is open.

Among the items requested are canned peas, canned corn, canned fruit, canned tuna, beef stew, corned beef hash, Chef Boyardee products, pasta sauce, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, tomato paste, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo and conditioner, body wash, deodorants, hand lotion, hand soap, and tissues.

Additionally, apple juice, cranberry juice, fruit juice, canola or olive oil, ketchup, mayonnaise, salad dressing, pancake syrup, snacks, cleaning products, laundry detergent, paper towels, and dish soap are requested.

Donors are asked to ensure that food items are nonperishable and within the labeled “Best By” or expiration date.

Newtown Lions Club member Kevin Corey is organizing the new event.

“I hope Newtown residents will contribute generously to continue essential support for neighbors in need during these challenging times,” he said.

Donations will be distributed to FAITH Food Pantry and other local pantries at the conclusion of the food drive.

The community center is open Monday to Thursday, 6 am to 9 pm; Friday, 6 am to 8 pm; Saturday, 7 am to 5:30 pm; and Sunday, 7 am to 5 pm.
