Recycle That Magazine

*Help! Does anyone who subscribes to The Economist magazine want to donate their subscription to the library once they’ve finished with it?

We had a generous donor who helped us out in the past, but they’ve moved out of town, and so we no longer have copies available for our periodicals collection.

Now On View

Reference librarian Andrea Zimmerman and curator Mary Thomas have collaborated on a new exhibit about Pola and Rex Stout which is located in the Reference Department.

Rex Stout is famous for his long literary career, notably stories featuring detective Nero Wolfe, and many of his paperback mysteries collected by Andrea are displayed. Pola was a famous textile weaver and fashion designer, and several of her handwoven wool fabrics are featured. There is a Newtown connection to this pair, since Mary Pace of George’s Hill Road, a skilled dressmaker, tailored Pola’s designs in the 1950s to 1980s, and one of her creations specially made for Pola is shown on a mannequin.

Please stop by to view the creative works of this unique couple of the 20th Century.

*Curator Mary Thomas would like to invite other residents of Newtown to share their collections with library patrons for display on a temporary basis. Please call the library if you’re interested in sharing your special interest with others.

Children’s Program

*Dive Into the Ocean:  Author, illustrator and science journalist Karen Romano Young will show slides from her trip down into the ocean in a submersible named Alvin on Wednesday, April 21, at 2 pm.

After the presentation she will lead participants in a shark drawing activity and sign copies of her books. The program is for ages 7-12. Registration is requested and can be done online.

For Young Adults

*Final Call: Newtown artist Suzanne Lang will offer “Basic & Perspective Drawing” on Saturday, April 17, from 12:30 to 2:30.

The program is limited to 15 students ages 10-18 (grades 5-12) who either live or attend school in Newtown. A $5 supply fee is payable at the program. Registration is required, and can be done online. No previous drawing experience is necessary.

Adult Programs

*Job Search Help with Cheryl Schwartz: Cheryl will be at the library to present “Job Search Strategies” on Thursday, April 22, from 3 to 4:30 pm, and then back on Thursday, June 17, also 3-4:30 pm, with “The Interview.”

*Book Donation Day: CH Booth Friends of the Library will host their Spring Book Donation Day on Sunday, April 25. Drop off used books, DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes, and LPs between noon and 5 pm, rain or shine, in the library’s parking lot.

Tax receipts are available. Call 203-270-4537 for additional information.

*Literature And Life Lecture Series: Mark Schenker will conclude his lecture series with “James Joyce” on Wednesday, April 28, at 7 pm. He has been discussing the relationship between literature and life for readers who see themselves as what Virginia Woolf called “the common reader”: the regular, literate reader who seeks more than pleasure and escapism from literature but who is not a professional critic or literary practitioner.

There is no charge but space is limited and so registration is requested. Visit the library’s website to register.

C.H. Booth Library is at 25 Main Street in Newtown. Call 426-4533 or visit CHBoothLibrary.org to register for any of the above listings, and for information on additional programs and offerings.
